Static and the faint cries of a raccoon await in the introduction to Burning Sky's Desolation, which proves to be an honorable act of deathcore, which is a mix between death metal and hardcore. The band mixes the low inhaled grunts, fast technical riffs, and brutal percussion with the more catchy elements and some vocal styles of hardcore music... Luckily, hardcore breakdowns are extremely sparse, dare I say unnoticeable. The fact that Burning Skies formed in 2002 and had only released one full-length album before this one makes it all the more impressive. The production is so good that you can actually feel the pummelling when the band really begins to rip into a thrashing segment, like the one on the short "Bauer Power" which also holds some grim melodic guitar lead work.

"Desolation... (For The Denial Of Ignorance)" flows very smoothly from the previous track, and then blows through the gate like a racehorse on drugs with punishing percussion, and a lot of energy in the performances. There are a lot of tempo changes, brutal downtuned riffs, and even a chirpy guitar sound that appears a couple times. They must have felt like they deserved the hardcore breakdown that concludes the title track, as it sits piously upon its throne made of soiled diapers. At least they didn't smother the album with them, rather they chose to actually write good songs. The guitar parts alone sounded like they took forever to record, especially with all those squeeky pinch harmonics they throw around so spontaneously, and at a brief 30 minutes, Desolation really leaves you wanting to hear it again.

Possibly the single-most impressive aspect of Burning Skies is that none of the members have a documented history in any notable bands which begs to ask: where did this musical talent come from? It's a young band with a bunch of youngsters playing incredibly tight material. Everything from the percussion to the vocals has been mixed perfectly, effects are tasteful when applied, and the production is so strong it could send you into a heavy metal seizure! What is that you ask? Your head bangs violently and uncontrollably. Definitely give this one a listen!

8.5/10
