Burst – Prey On Life

Burst – Prey On Life
Relapse Records – 2003
By Russell Garwood

“Prey On Life”, Burst’s debut full length, showcases a relatively complex metallic hardcore sound, utilising frequent dynamic and time change. Quiet passages featuring clean and acoustic guitars, laid back drumming and electronics are juxtaposed by unforgiving metalcore assaults, while the mid-ground is filled with melodic riffage and singing. The vocals of Linus Jägerskog are a hardcore scream, unforgiving yet limited in variation and originality, while the bass, courtesy of Jesper Liveröd, is complex and well performed. Guitarists Jonas Rydberg and Robert Reinholdz provide sporadic catchy tunes, helping create a more unusual sound, and keeping the music interesting. The drums, performed by Patrik Hultin are also of a high standard, negotiating dynamic changes with ease and augmenting the fast paced music.

With clear and well balanced production, “Prey On Life” is an impressive debut full-length, displaying proficient song-writing and a mature sound. I will follow Burst’s future efforts with interest to see how they develop. This release is a must for fans of the recent explosion in metalcore.
