I use Yamaha HS50 and I have them connected to my soundcard with 3m standard guitar cables. Is that ok?

Would it be a dramastic change of sound if I bought shorter more quality cables. How are things standing here?

And no, as long as you aren't picking up any significant noise or interference then you won't notice any difference. I've always used short guitar cables for my monitors and never had any problems.

There's no need to fix something that isn't broken, but balanced cables are usually used for connecting monitors.

My monitors have balanced combi jack/XLR connectors. I've been using unbalanced instrument cables but have often wondered about switching to a balanced cable. Could anyone recommned a good resonably priced balanced speaker cable?

You don`t want speaker cables, but standard balanced signal/mic cables for use between your soundcard and the monitors (if they`re active). When using balanced cables, the noise will be lower, and you`ll usually get a few db in volume increase. Mogami makes good cables for a fairly good price.
