Canadian Dollar Passes US Dollar

America needs lifestyle changes and a competent administration in order to survive the 3 way competition with the EU and China.

Furthermore, I think that if you own a car you shouldn't be on wellfare. If you are poor you should take the bus instead, not own a car. A car grants you confort, that you do not require. If you require transportation there are metro buses, subways, and sluts. Cars are a luxury not a necesity. I take a bus to school daily. I find it ridiculous that high school kids have their own SUVs and drive them to school. IMHO in no sane world high school kids should own SUVs. SUVs are family cars for those who live in areas with shitty roads, or who go off road often. I don't see that necessity in Seattle, and especially for single people. Trucks are for people who need to move shit around often enough to justify having one, or live on a ranch, again how many people in seattle live on a ranch? Thus in Seattle should be imho a lot less cars and trucks than there are. Sadly enough Seattle is one of the better places in this matter, i hear in the midwest and the south is much worse.

Public trans doesn't run after 6pm here, and only goes on a very fixed route. Can't use it for a job unless you live along the route. Most do not. And being a farm area, trucks are very much needed here. SUVs are not.

in that case, better public transportation is one of the changes needed.
I still stand behind the fact that car owners shouldn't be on wellfare, at least in places with decent transportation like Seattle or Washington state. I don't think there is a place in Seattle where I can't get by bus.

Later Edit: i just noticed you added the truck need. I agree in the case of a farm land are, but in big urban areas most people don't need them, unless they move shit very often

man the american dollar is getting weaker everywhere, crazyness. i might not even be able to go to wacken this year since after i calculated its all so expensive due to the euro being worth so much more =/

Public transportation is pretty shitty in most cities. It's unfair to say that people on welfare should not own a car
And if people aren't on any kind of government assistance, it's also not right to say what cars they can, and cannot drive.

the county/city will never approve more money for public transport. They've been corrupt for decades. :P

Around here, the agreement would be "Poor people can't have any NEW cars."

i think some regulation is necessary. Not direct regulation like making them illegal, but putting a huge excise tax on vehicles with low mpg or on gas. I think there are some limits to freedom if it is for the better good of the masses. Now don't bring the commie and slippery slope arguments here. As a nation (and superpower), being dependent on foreign oil in the context of today is a shitty idea. That is why gas is so expensive in Europe, it is taxed ridiculously high. You don't see there that many SUVs there if any at all. Most people there care about fuel efficiency and the practical use of a car, not about its size (unless they are some kind of business or agricultural person) or engine power. I saw today some person with a sticker saying: "Driving a gas guzzler is patriotic". I felt like pissing on their car then shitting under their hood

I've seen plenty of SUVs that can get at least 26 mpg highway, with some even going as high as 30. That's not exactly a gas guzzler

often those statistics are off. There was a scandal in the national news about this a year ago. If you fill up a tank, figure out how many miles you have driven with a tank full of a gas and do distance/gallons you will see the true average of an SUV.
the "you" is not intended to you personally, just in general

um, ever been to the 'hood? poor black people drive huge SUVs too.

Yeah, I know, but only the ones slinging.

Chromatose is right; it's mainly a bunch of single white women who drive them...or if they aren't single, they've got one kid and decided they need a bus to transport little Jimmy or Jane to soccer practice. You can tell by all the scrape marks along the side of the vehicle by trying to get in and out of parking spaces.

Sure, I'd like one. I'd actually like an older Jeep Cherokee, but I can't afford it. Well, I probably could but I'm fine with what I have. I need it to transport all my gear back and forth to practice, since my drummer lives an hour and a half away. However, I bought a big fucking station wagon for that shit so I'd have plenty of room when we go on road trips, to festivals, transporting, etc. Until this one falls apart, I don't need a new one.

That's the problem in the US these days; the line between need and want no longer exists.

There should be a road tax in the US just like there is here, where once a year you have to pay a sum of money based on the fuel efficiency and emission rating of your car. I think I pay like 160 euros per year or something for my car. People who own corvettes here have to pay probably around 1000 or so. Also, insurance goes up as well based on the size of the engine, which it does also in the US, but not nearly as much.

The notion here is, "If you want a monster vehicle, that's fine. You're gonna have to pay for it."

Problem is, the people who have monster vehicles usually don't give a fucking about how much they pay for it, hence all the money put into gas and the actual vehicle. An extra $1,000 isn't going to persuade anyone differently. It just makes the already struggling people who have to pay the 160 euro suffer more.

I must suggest everyone to watch, "Who Killed The Electric Car?"

Good movie.

without reading all the posts (cause there's a lot!)... here are a few of my thoughts as if anyone gives a shit:

the Canadian dollar is worth more because they have a stable economy, unlike the USA who is always fucking with things that aren't broken. The person in the White House makes no difference as he/she/it will always change things for better or worse... it's almost a luck of the draw.

And gas prices don't mean shit. Europe has huge prices compared to people in the midwest USA, but those in the USA are complaining endlessly. Stop your bitching! I'm hurting from the major increase too, but I've adapted - take carpools, busses, mass transit, and don't travel unless you need to (concerts are a must).

Now back to my Vodka...
