You prolly all saw the Greenpeace activists cutting off the coal supply to Munmorah Power Station the other day etc. etc.

Reference to CARMA http://carma.org/ and their assessment of world wide power stations.

Spent an hour working though their site, and it's all but total rubbish WRT Australia.

I agree with their cause, but if they are going to make such public statements they should at least get something of their facts right.

I couldn't see anything about all that there, but if they're talking per head, yeah, that makes sense. Pollution isn't only caused by power generation, and in those two countries (as well as India) there are *huge* numbers of people without power, or who only have limited access to power.

Australia figures high in studies like this because most people in the country have full access to power. If we had twice the number of people but those people didn't have power, we'd be twice as good.

Gorey they rate China and Brazil well on their big hydros, as well as the fact that their people are generally lacking access to electricity.

Three Gorges (China), as well as displacing a shitload of people, will probably be a serious greenhouse emitter until all of the flooded vegetation finishes rotting. Article in New Scientist reckoned that Hydros don't become "green" for a long long time.

That rotting vegetation thing isn't something that I'd considered before. I guess it's functionally equivalent to burning it all, huh.

Only over a longer period of time.
