Country today is the closest thing to 80s rock that you'll see.

I'd personally love it if some of these older acts actually got heavier and faster though. Or more proggish.

You'd think the way metal has evolved we'd see someone like Dio having more double-bass power metal songs, rather than plodding songs. Or maybe Van Halen going a little prog.
 
Underwood performed HOME SWEET HOME on Idol last season, maybe even the finale...can't remember.

I mean, I don't think it's a stretch in any way. A ballad is a ballad.
Any genre with guitars, bass, and drums can pull it off if they have the chops.

What I dislike is how artists who had ZERO connection to country are putting out complete albums of it.
(IE - Darius Rucker from Hootie, etc).
