Check out what me and my friends are partaking in tonight...

Huh, from what i know the real stuff (like it was served in the past) makes you blind if consumed over a certain period of time.
So i hope you can still read this. :)

 sure he won`t go blind. But it`s true the original stuff (not today`s Absinthe) could make you blind (just google Absinthe/Blindness).

Well we did the whole procedure of pouring the cold water over the sugar sitting on the perforated spoon etc. etc. And from what I read on a variety of websites, while it doesn't make you trip, it (apparently) gives you a very lucid kind of drunk that's supposed to feel "enlightening" (uh-huh, tell me another one ) And while this all may be, none of us unfortunately could get more than a serving down (a shot with enough water to dissolve the sugar) - not because of it's alcoholic kick (there was none at all, actually, despite it being 106 proof), but because it tasted SO FUCKING HORRIBLE. I mean I'm talking terrible, not so much the taste itself but the after-taste. One of my friends got heartburn, and we all summarily decided to skip another serving and just stick to good ol' booze and brews at the bars.

Just FYI fellas!

No worries, mate, IMHO you really didn't miss anything. I think absinthe is highly overhyped because of it's mystic reputation :)

I drank Absinthe once ... we even imported a bottle with a higher tujon-level from the czech republic.

It tasted "okay" and I also think I got kinda "high" on it. But hey ... I drank half a bottle, so it could have also been just the booze itself :D

Sounds like it should be the drink of choice over at gearslutz.

Ahahahahahahahahahhahahaha, from all that I've heard about that place, that sounds about right!

And Joe, if yours tasted anything like mine, you're a trooper man! I could tolerate 160 proof Devil's Springs Vodka (granted, with A LOT of orange juice, but still...), but man did this stuff trigger the gag reflex

A few years ago I was in a band that got to do a week of shows in Japan, and absinthe is all our drummer and I drank the whole time. Our bassist hurled up his first shot and never touched it again.
