The rythm section sounds mighty, powerful & pleasent at the same time..that´s great! The frequences are absolutely enjoyable to listen to. The overdrived vocals makes a good contrast to it. If I had a car, I´d listen to it while driving to the next Mc Donald on the Autobahn, believe me :) Great job, dude!

Test to delay the guitars a whopping 10-20 ms to see if the groove gets groovier, since they're actually playing before the song. When it's this "simple" groove, it's more important that everyone plays at the right time. Trust me, been there done that. ;)

guess you're right, having a similar problem in one of the other songs, I'll try moving them back a bit.

thanks

Mix is good, but the song ... omg ... there's nothing in this song that is exciting or even remotely interesting to me. I had to turn this off after the Kermit-meets-BurtonCBell-vocals came in ...

Sometimes I really don't envy your job, Lasse.

Opinions on the mix:

a) the drums sound too "modern metal" for me. I'd probably have gone for a big, roomy Led Zeppelin-esque drumsound with a parallel distortion bus tucked underneath. But I don't know what the band wanted ...

b) I'd up the guitars a bit. The vocals and drums seem much louder.

actually it's exactly this simple groove that I like about this song.

the other songs are more "complex" and as well have more guitartracks (=louder) and a different feel etc. (that was pretty much what determined the drumsound and I decided to not change it too much throughout the songs)

one is even a nice balad with a cello..(that one does have different drumsounds, less modern, more room etc)

I picked this one because I liked the driving feel it's got and I didn't wanna post the "best" song before the album is out ;)
but I was aware, that this is the song that'd polarize the most

Mission "Drive Feel": Accomplished
The mix is great, everything sounds very clear.
Although I think that the drums are very polished to fit the song, I would want them to sound a little dirtier, but it's a matter of personal taste.
Can you post any other song?

yeah, we were going for a really modern drumsound.
I'm sure I can post something else soon...after the mastering.

I really like bass and snare!! Can you give us any info about them (eq,compression)?
Did you use sample on snare?

snare was my Yamaha sd6455.
I blended in a sample of the same snare from the same session to get more separation and control, as well as a tiny bit of a sample I took from a pearl free floating (I think I've posted the sample on this forum, if I'm not mistaken).
miced with 2 sm57-->API preamp (driven hard)
there's also a wee bit of the dry piezo-signal to add crack (important ingredient)
skin was a Powerstroke3 (no dot)
Mainly MH Channelstrip on the snare, compression setting "smooth", a boost in the high-end.
a bit API2500 on the drumbus.

Reverb was Cubase4 Roomworks

I really like this track, great groove, good feel, evolves just enough to keep things interesting. Drums sound amazing, and I love the overdriven vox. Is that just preamp slaughtering?

fixed (same link)

As usual, fkn awesome job Lasse, as usual you've made an otherwise mediocre song bearable!! I'm loving the delay on the guitars now, its kickass. Pity the drummer is limited to Lars Ulrichesque SD-K-SD-K (AAARGH!), but this is probably the coolest drum production I've heard from your work. I always love a good kick sound, and yours is hands down the best on this forum (bar Andy Sneap :)). Is it the D6 again? Any samples?

thanks,
but this drummer is actually really good. as I said, the other songs are quite different and show some interesting tomwork, doublebass etc.
this song is not meant to be typical metalcore (or even metal), the goal was to achieve an locomotive like groove, and I think the drumming fits just fine.
but yep I can see that this song doesn't please everyones taste since it's quite special (especially if you're expecting standard-metal).

I really hope I can upload a faster/different song soon....cause I see some great potential in this band (then again...I know the other songs ;) ).

kick is a blend of different stuff, primarily the kit's kick miced with D6 and 414 (outside), I've got a clicky sample blended in as well.

Thanks heaps for the compliment, I'm quite satisfied with the drumsound myself ;)

I'll see if I can dig out a sample.

bass was pasive bass blend of 3 tracks

sansamp:fullrange
DI: lows
Tubefactor-->sansamp: heavily distorted midrange (600-3k)

I've tried an ampeg, an H&K and a Glockenklang amp as well..sansamp worked best in this case

Drums and bass sound particularly good Lasse, top job!

thanks.
yep, the guitars gave me the biggest problems in the mix, used a bit EQ this time (not much though, 2 narrow 2dB cuts and one wider 1dB boost or so)..but usually I try to avoid that, I always find myself having to tweak more with pasive pups (these were duncan sh-5 in Ibanez mahogany set-neck double cutaway)
