Wasn't Izzy the main songwriter for GnR back in the day? I was never a big fan of the band, but I seem to remember an article appearing about a decade ago which said that Izzy was responsible for penning all of the hit songs from Appetite for Destruction. Then, after he left, they couldn't repeat that kind of songwriting with Use Your Illusion (Although I remember some really good songs off of those albums) and that's when everybody started to leave and everything started to unravel.
I have no idea if that's true or not, but it could explain why Axle has been hiding out for the last two decades, desperately trying to pen another Mr. Brownstone or Paradise City.
It will be interesting to see people's reaction to this album once it finally comes out. I'm sure there will be the diehard fans who will buy it no matter what (although I have to wonder if they even exist anymore). And there will be the people buying it out of pure curiosity...morbid or otherwise.
But what Soundave said earlier really hit the nail on the head. There is NOTHING worth this kind of wait for an album. I mean, the only way it would be justifiable on Axle's part is if he were to have recorded this generations version of Sgt. Pepper or Dark Side of the Moon. And call me pessimistic....but I highly doubt that.
This album is worthy of Spinal Tap. It's very title (Chinese Democracy) has become an industry joke for a project that should have been pulled a looooong time ago. This just has the smell of the "$1.99 cutout bin at K Mart" all over it (If they even have those around anymore).
Then again, when the first single is released and it becomes more important then John Lennon's "Imagine," you can all come back and remind me how wrong I was.
