Metal is actually home to quite a few "artistic" bands, however they are usually pretty obscure.
Some random examples of metal bands that (imho) have plenty of artistic merit:
Agalloch
Be'lakor
Daylight Dies
Slumber
Neurosis/Isis/Pelican/Tides (if you want to count post-metal)
Scale The Summit
Swallow the Sun
Wolves In The Throne Room
Clad in Darkness
Orphaned Land
Alcest/Amesoeurs
Sepia Dreamer
To name a few...
