In slight vein of the evil classical thread I’m interested in hearing what you all consider some of the great classically influenced metal albums. Let ‘er rip…

um... aren't they all?

I suppose one could say that, but I meant very obviously influenced, such as Winds-Reflections of the I (Which I just received from The End Records  )

THE GATHERING - How to measure a planet

THE GATHERING - if_then_else

i mean wow, 2 of my all time favourites here. brilliant, theres loads of classical influence in here, at the end of many songs theres about a minute or two of instrumental brilliance.

Anything by Symphony-X....... hmmm..... Vinny Moore... I think the name of the album was Odessey or something like that. heheheh both of which I'm sure alot of the people on this board haven't herad of or don't listen to :)

Actually, in terms of their vision and scope, I'd say Ulver. Not quite what you mean, I know, but 'Themes.." got me so excited because I felt that finally, a band was taking something as serious as, say, composing a symphony.

Anyway, some more serious stuff:
Nightwish (and not just because they have opera vocals)
Arcturus (last 2 albums (not counting the remix one))
Tristania have a choral thing happening here and there.
Within Temptation, their last album (Mother Earth) has a really full orchestral score, I think it's all synthesised, but it sounds really good (they must be rich to afford good synthesisers)

[edit] and Diabolical Masquerade- Death's Design. Movie soundtrack, it's very cool.
And In The Woods use a string 4tet on "Omnio", which is such a great album I need to mention it, though it's not really 'Classically influenced" ;)

And Bolt Thrower. Don't forget Bolt Thrower..... :p

YES! 'Omnio' is one of the best, if not THE best, albums ever recorded!!

OPeth fans would LOVE it, as well!

I love Opeth, and I bought Omnio a while ago after a recommendation. The verdict...I just don't get it. Whenever I try to listen to it, I wind up turning it off, it is just NOT an enjoyable experience for me, and I''ve tried many times. I don't knowwhat it is about it, it just rubs me the wrong way. Now I love types of music, and I like experimental/progressive metal (I even like Green Carnation, their spin off band). What am I missing?

My absolute favorites -

Symphony X - V
Tristania - World of Glass
Nikolo Kotzev - Nostradamus
Lacrimosa - Elodia
Therion - Vovin

Then there are countless others, by Stratovarius, Rhapsody, Savatage, Nightwish, Kamelot, Yngwie Malmsteen, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, sometimes Pain of Salvation, also occasionally Rage.

There would be really to many to list. I think a classical influence is rarely a bad thing, so I tend to seek out lots of such albums.

You need to listen to it in the dark, for a start :D, preferably while lying down and in a subdued mood. I'd recommend putting track two (I am your flesh) on repeat for a while (I love that song).
