I'll never understand how classifying something is so important to people. Most bands are rather east to classify, as long as they try to imitate a certain style of music. In the case when a band decides what to do, and do not act in borders of one genre, or without any borders at all, classifications are useless.
It is strange to imagine, but Kayo Dot is a popular band to try and put into a box. On Rate Your Music dot com - http://rateyourmusic.com/artist/kayo_dot - some of the attempts sound pretty funny(and some are quite possibly jokes). I once heard Kayo Dot named "Rock/Metal with a classical influence". Somewhat true, but to most people that associates with hairy men shredding guitars, singing about slaying dragons and playing virtuoso piano solo's. Gotta love RYM's new tags though - they even have 'astral metal' and 'shit metal'(nice tag to put the most annoying of numetal bands into).
