Codeseven Dancing Echoes / Dead Sounds
Equal Vision Records 2005
By Russell Garwood
Codesevens once played hardcore, a fact youd never guess from listening to Dancing Echoes / Dead Sounds. Instead of the abrasive sound of old, this release showcases some mellow, heartfelt rock tunes. Touches of epic rock, emo and soft electronica provide variety, in a hard-to-classify sound. Lightly distorted, melodic, chord-based guitars carry the songs, over which fragile singing creates memorable, wistful tunes. The drums - unusual for the style - often opt for double-speed or complex beats beneath the otherwise laidback songs. An excellent contrast. The bass is prominent and well written, underpinning the catchy songs. An occasional veil of electronics is another nice addition, in a musically varied sound. Despite the multifaceted music, the mood is surprisingly uniform, with a downcast, remorseful feel.
Clean production, as you would expect from such a release, leaves the polished sound easily accessible on first listen, and allows the record to grow with age. Dancing Echoes / Dead Sounds may disappoint Codeseven fans of old, yet for fans of emotive rock, this is well worth checking out.
