Could band be influenced by their previous works?

Hey.
The whole idea came to me when i was shuffling in my fone and i was thinking : Imagine i were the one who wrote all those songs and those Led Zeppelin, Opeth, Priest never existed ! but how would I write sth similar to Opeth's stuff if i didn't have influences of bands like Led Zeppelin if they never existed.so i got this question : Could bands be influenced by their own previous works?

It's an impossible scenario you're describing. But every songwriter have their own style and some of that never goes away so it's only natural to have those earlier songs in the back of your mind. But the great bands in my opinion are those who try to be original and not just ease into the old ways.

If it would be different, it would be different. Get it? Can you be influenced by your own previous works, yes, you made them, it's still in you. Anything that has a link with you, that you can perceive, influences you consciously or unconsciously.

Without these influences, Opeth wouldn't be our actual Opeth. There must be a starting point where the influences are not taken only from you, but elsewhere, and not necesserly music. Anyway, shut up, me.

Well true, but death magnetic still proves that even when Metallica intentionally tries to please their old fans, they're completely incapable. It's ok but, given the fact that they were pretty much trying to reach out to old thrash metal fans, it was still a shitty attempt.

I think after all the shit Soundtrack to Escape From got from all the fans, Come Clarity (and the later shitfest) was an attempt to return to the guitar harmonies of old In Flames.

^ And it failed miserably. Reroute to Remain was still fine, and Soundtrack had some okay songs. After that, nothing, really. Maybe some riffs? Makes me wanna burf.

I concur, I think this is a very interesting question.

But as simple as the question is, the answer is long and complex.

I have studied contemporary classical music, especially in the experimental/avant garde era of early 20th century from Schoenberg to Glass, and Crumb to working under Dunleavy. If you can comprehend the evolution of standards, you can understand how Opeth could not of been Opeth without their influences. The individual strive for personal identity would of been paved from experience granted in life. There is no evolution without mutation, which is (in a nutshell) the basis for all modern, contemporary music.

IMO the answer is no.

P.S I didn't like the last three In Flames albums much either, but R2R was good imo, Jester Race is still one of my favorites.

Very clever question. The answer is no, it would normally not be the same. BUT, there is always the possibility that, through pure random anomaly of nature, you COULD have written your songs the same way without your influences.
