Creating the Music

I usually start with one or two riffs, play them for a while, come up with more stuff to fit it, or with the parts for the rest of the band.....

have you...em... heard either of those bands?

if you have, and you're joking, then.... ok...

if not...
Sorry to interrupt your fanboy moment, but imagine for a moment if those quite good bands took your advice on some message board 10 years ago, instead of writing their own original stuff. Who's a fool now? :Spin:

i agree, musically, it comes down to having something really hot- a catchy riff or a good progression that you build on.

alternately, i've been doing lyrics first lately and then writing music to fit the theme and that works as well

If Spawn of Possession played Spiral Architect covers, they would fucking pwn twice as much.

and you missed my point st00pid. What if both bands, in their inception, came on here for advice, listened to you, and neither one wrote a single original song.

yeah, i got that.

it was a joke.

actually my first comment was also a joke.

but somehow I seriously doubt that the kid with the ninja turtles avatar asking for songwriting help on UM is going to be the next John Lennon, so the cover band rout might be his best bet.

There is honestly no way you can know that.

and you might have said the same if you met John Lennon as a kid.

in short, you and me know fuck-all, and shouldn't be telling people they're better off playing other people's music. where would new music come from if everyone did this? there is only so much to be learned from copying the art of others, instead of pursuing the art of self.

doesn't mean I'm not probably right.

@ kenneth r :

my point, since you insist on making my flippant post into a serious discussion, is that this kid, by all odds, will probably not be making any particularly useful art at any point during his career, and I would more appreaciate a band that played Spawn Of Possession covers than another shit band making insipid, uninspired shit music.

but it's all irrelevant, cause i don't really care what he does.

k?

yes please.

and actually, I know APoorMusician, and I think he's capable of rocking out. I would have given you the same advice had you been the OP, and were I the OP, I'd hope someone would for myself as well.
