Criss Oliva Memorial Concert 10/17

This show was A-MAZING. http://www.crissoliva.com/index.html

I'll try to be brief, cause the overall experience was a total trip.

1st - it was very cool to run into some people that I met at PP4 earlier this year. I was suprised to see so many in Tampa. People from all over the world and the USA was there and THAT was pretty cool. Running intot he lead singer from Pagan's Mind kinda blew my mind, as usual the man was extremely cool. He even went out of his way to talk to me later in the night.

The opening band was called Streets, a Savatage tribute band. A good buddy of mine is the bass player for this band, so it was cool to see him playing a gig of this calibur. You can check out their web site http://streetsband.netfirms.com . The lead singer sounded so much like Jon that you would have thought he jumped up on stage with them if you weren't looking at times.

Next up was Circle II Circle. Of course it was an incredible performance. They played the entire album including Fields of Sorrow which we didn't get to see in Atlanta.

After them was Jon's new solo stuff with Matt & Chris from C2C in the band. It was all original, all damn good and one Beatles cover. I really hope he's able to release an album of those tunes. For never having heard them at all before the crowd was going crazy.

Doctor Butcher came on for 2 songs! This I didn't expect at all and totally blew my mind. They played Don't Talk To me and one other song that slips my mind right now.

After that was Savatage. For some reason every time I've tried to see this band play live something prevented me. This set was awesome. Here's the setlist in no particular order unless noted and this is from memory so don't shoot me if I forget one, in fact I know I probably will;

Twisted Little Sister (opener)
Sirens (2nd)
Power of the Night
In The Dream
Wishing Well (cover)
Hall of the Mountain King (closer)
Gutter Ballet
(I think) Temptation Revelation
*a new version of* Jesus Saves
Tonight He Grins Again
Can You Hear Me Now
New York Don't Mean Nothing
Believe
//songs with Zak//
Edge of Thorns
Follow Me
Miles Away
Lights Out

Awesome review, man!

I was there and it was one of the best shows I've even been to... I mean, Savatage is my favorite band... so it can't get any better than that!

Jon's solo shit is awesomeee!! Some really bluesy stuff...I can't wait for the CD

Savatage fans are the best! I met people from Brazil, Norway, Germany, Greece and all over the US!

It was a great experience...

I agree - this was an awesome show from top to bottom! I loved Jon's new stuff, and yep, Troy from Streets (tribute band) really did sound a lot like Jon!! I got a ton of pics and am in the editing process now. Zak's a hard man to shoot - he moves constantly! Loved the couple of DB tunes too - what a trip!

One thing I have to say though --- kudos to the PP IV attendees --- I was at both shows, and can honestly say the reception, crowd involvement, and just plain electricity running through the venue was way higher at Prog Power for Circle II Circle than in Tampa - which I found strange since the Tampa crowd was all die hard Savatage fans and most of us LOVED Zak with Savatage....so I can't explain it, but I know it happened -- PP IV patrons were da bom!!!! Both CIIC shows were incredible, so I don't know what the issue was --- I loved them and screamed my head off! :)

The next night, Streets played again at a club called Boomerz...well Jon was there and introduced them, and off they went....they had some techno sound difficulties and actually stopped after a few numbers to get them straightened out, which they did....then later Jon came back out to make a few comments and ended up doing a couple of songs with them!

I was not the only one who noticed how GREAT Jon's voice sounded....better than the '01 tour, no question....he sounded as if he was at the top of his game --- and what a great voice he has!

THANKS JON!!! :D Long live the Mountain King!

Well if you live around the Tampa area you can probably agree when I say the music scene here pretty much sucks. People who go to PP are people who hunt down bands and albums, more of a hardcore metal fan.

For people to get into C2C in Tampa, we need a radio station that will play something other than Limp Bizkit and the Metallica black album.
