Curious about Royer's Ribbon Microphones?

The R-121 can get some great tones, especially when combined with a dynamic mic, but I don't see any real reason to get one unless you have a big budget, great preamps and converters, and a good amp(not to mention the tons of other gear that is hugely helpful when recording). Stick with an SM57 or MD421, or a 409 or e609. There's no reason to spend so much on that, in my opinion.

:tickled: You got me!
Don't take it wrong, I am a 57 lover, no doubt about that. But I must admit I was amazed on how Ribbons can handle the job for almost any source (not only guitars). If I had the money, I probably go for the stereo one. But guess what, I have no money, too bad :) I hope do not sound like a commercial... :ill:

I've tried these out, and although some people are digging them, I couldn't find a use for the 121. Bear in mind these mics are all fig8 so you need a good sounding room also.

sure enough they're expensive and yes, you need good preamps and stuff. But I think Burny just wanted to share the samples, which are DEFINITELY great. The one where Steve Albini compares it with the SM57 is... well, dishartening for me :p ('m a 57 owner). Not that the 57 sucks or anything, it's really good, but damn... I'd kill for that SMOOTH low end, it's just so much more natural... on solid state amps like my Peavey with metalzone, the 57 can get really harsh. Dunno what to do (apart from getting another pedal or something) to make it tamer....

Yep, that was point, nothing more, nothing less... ;)
