Is this even possible on an existing guitar? Or is it only possible on a completely custom guitar? Or is it even possible at all? I ask because I was looking at my guitar the other day, and I realized that the simple dot inlays on my neck are kinda boring, and I thought it would look cool with some crazy design on the neck. So is it even possible, or am I just talking outta my ass? And would it change the sound of my guitar if it could be done? Any thoughts welcome

While it would be possible to do, it would probably be very expensive. I have no idea about the figures, but I'd guess it would be cheaper to get another neck for it - or even another guitar if you trade in your current one.

I'm guessing that it could be done.....but I know I wouldn't attempt it. You'd have to route (sp?) out your design exactly the depth to match the thickness of the abalone (or whatever) you're going to put in there, or else it's not going to be level. Then you're going to want to cut the new abalone exact to match your cut outs. You'll have to put filler around all the edges if it's not an exact fit and sand it smooth. If you're a really, really good artist/woodworker you might have some luck, but it would scare the crap outta me to dig into my fretboard! I'm not too sure if it would change your sound or not....that's a good question.

I have one of those Turser Les Paul copies you see on ebay with the Serpent inlay on the neck. Looking at that, I just think a do-it-yourself-er would be getting in pretty deep. But then again, if you're really good with that kind of craft - you might be ok...and maybe even on the way to a new career!

You can always try to pick up a cheap old neck somewhere and give it a practice run.

They can add custom inlays to a guitar. Their work isn't cheap... however it is very reasonable. Lee Garver is a nice guy, though touchy at times, his work is excellent. They've done factory work for Gibson, Fender and currently do most of the custom graphics for Jackson.

I would highly recommend their work... inlays, refinishing and rebuilding, as well as creating custom guitars and GFX.

custom inlays rock, i am buying a custom ran guitar for christmas and im getting vine inlays put on it, it should kick ass, and yeah i think it is possible to get inlays put on an existing guitar, look like xenophobe has already confirmed that for us though :)
