Cynic

A great progressive death metal band who combined technical death metal with jazz fusion.

They made one album called Focus in '93. It is amazing and you should get it. But don't take my word for it...

"Hi I'm Troy McClure and you may remember me from such films as, 'The President's Neck is Missing!' and 'Leper in the Backfield.' You should buy Cynic's album called Focus. The reissue comes with bonus material."

i always wondered what happened to that band. seriously. i remember reading an article on them back around the time DT's "Awake" came out and then *poof* nothing. now i know. thanks.

In fact it's the other way round.
But it's okay, just your opinion and it's wrong like so often. :P
I mean, seriously...Still Life > Deliverance?

"My opinion is better than your opinon"
"My taste is better than your taste"
"My view is better than your view"
"My belief is better than your belief"
"My sentiment is better than your sentiment"
"My take is better than your take"
"My stand is better than your stand"
"My notion is better than your notion"
"My feeling is better than your feeling"

"blah, blah, blah..."
"Neener, Neener, Neener..."

I could go on but..... :Smug:

OUt.:flame:

well i have seen both bands play the same show... I have always loved Atheist, but Cynic kicks thier ass in terms of musicianship. But then again they are very different. Steve Flynn(drums) was the best thing about Atheist after Roger Patterson died. Cynic imploded after only 1 real album but I have heard of another album that was in the can when they broke up.. but I have not "heard" it yet... I have alot of their demos from when they were more brutal metal, even in those shitty tapes you could hear that they were on to something new. If you really like Cynic then check out the new Gordian Knot c.d. It has a few of the Cynic members guesting on it and it is written by the bassist on the Focus album. I have to say that comparing these 2 bands is silly anyway.. Why can't we just focus on the music they make and appreciate it for what it is....

Absofuckinglutely.
It's stupid and pointless. But I tried to avoid stuff like that and was ignored merciless.
So, bring it on.

Atheist is faster than Cynic...but other than Atheist, Cynic can really be dabbed as progressive death metal. Focus I'd say is the one of the most essential progressive metal albums ever...even if it's death metal. It's a very broadened representation of how original and diverse a death metal band can be for the time. At the time 1993...you really only had Atrocity, Atheist, Pestilence - testimony of the ancients, demilich...Focus stood out the most in extreme music period I'd say. Fantastic.

yeah i've heard a lot of people say this, and i have one leering question... how is this jazz fusion at all? i listen to a lot of death metal, and a lot of jazz fusion, and honestly cynic just sounds like technical death metal to me.

anyone care to explain?

Both the bassist and guitarist(s) use a lot of atonal jazz scales, like stuff from Watchtower and that over-the-top technical shit. Also, unlike most technical death, there's no blast-beats and it's just generally not as fast. Also, the synth vocals and fretless bass were pretty prevelent in a lot of 1980s fusion stuff.
