I've always been fascinated with DP's sound. It just sounds so good. I feel like Kanye West's (*putting my flame suit*) music sounds really good as well. I found this article online, but really doesn't understand what the guys in DP mean by sampling and sampling again... http://mixonline.com/mag/audio_daft_punk/

I know NOTHING about electronic music. Any good sources of info? Every time I try and write an electronic piece it sounds incredibly amateurish...

I'm not completely sure this is correct because the wording of the article is a bit weird, but I believe they're talking about resampling. "Sampling and sampling again" just means that the DP guys play a part on whatever instrument, record that, load it into their sampler, fuck about with effects and chopping of the rhythm, and then bounce that and repeat the process. With each level of resampling, you're adding subtle bits to the sound that add up to a more interesting tone. Loads of producers in dubstep use this technique to get really nasty basslines.

This forum has always been my go to spot for electronic music knowledge: http://www.dogsonacid.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=4

I just bought the Tron soundtrack. Epic. Works better with the visuals though.

I think the soundtrack CD should have been edited to be more standalone.

I'd read the article before but didnt feel like skimming it for the context at the moment, but if I remember correctly they were referring to how Daft Punk sampled a song when making their song, and then Kanye West sampled that Daft Punk song that was made with a sample. So in essence Kanye West sampled a sample.

EDIT:
original

daft punk

kanye west

I love Daft Punk, but i fuckin' hate Kanye West.. the guy doesn't know shit about music, and it should be illegal for him to enter a studio.

If you like monotone rythmless music that completely lacks inspiration then Kanye fits well in your collection.
Otherwise, its complete garbage.

How you can listen to college dropout and graduation and think it's garbage is mind boggling. Whether you like the guy or not, his music is anything but boring and "rythmless".

Yeah, some of my favourite DP tracks are more like remixes than original compositions. :D

And this is way more fun than it should be... http://www.dothedaft.com/idaft/

Explain whats good about this song?
The fact that it sounds like everything else in the genre?
Or is it the fact that no-one can manage to sing it?
Or that the "rapping" is slow, uninspired and really doesn't have any message?

What in the fuck was that Kanye
I told you to do some shit for the kids
You can give me your muthafucking graduation ticket right now
You will not walk across that stage, you won抰 slide across that stage
A muthafucka can抰 pull you across that stage Kanye
Who told you see, I told you to do something up lifting
I抦 trynna get you out here with these white people and this how you gone do me
You know what us a nigga
And I don抰 mean that in no nice way
Had little kids sing about the shit, the jokes on you
You throw your mutha hands in the air, and wave good-bye to everybody
Cause you getting the fuck out of this campus
Mutha what you gone do now

Now to take Public Enemy for instance:

Yo! ho! yo nigga! yo nigga! no nigga!
Check it out
How can you say to me yo my nigga
Cursin' up a storm with your finger on a trigger
Feelin' all the girls like a big gold digger
Take a small problem
Make a small problem bigger
Yo I ain't poor I got dough
Don't consider me your brother no more
Goddamn kilogram how do you figure
I don't want to be called yo nigga

Or Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five:

It's like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder
How I keep from going under
It's like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder
How I keep from going under

Broken glass everywhere
People pissing on the stairs, you know they just don't care
I can't take the smell, I can't take the noise no more
Got no money to move out, I guess I got no choice
Rats in the front room, roaches in the back
Junkies in the alley with the baseball bat
I tried to get away, but I couldn't get far
Cause a man with a tow-truck repossessed my car

They had something to say, and did good music at the same time.
Kanye sounds like N'Sync with some retarded ape rhyming about nothing.. just another yo nigga'(To put it as Flavor Flav would.).

im not saying kanye has the most important things to say, or that his actual lyrics are something to take a second glance at... cause they are not. Im more so talking about his producer skills. the way his samples are so perfect. The song on graduation that uses the steely dan sample is genius. it just works so well. its not like hes just taking a sample and choppin it up and putting some stupid beat over it. they are actually well crafted songs.

Public enemy is a political rap group and yea they do have a message. Kanye never claimed to have this big message in his music. its just fun music to listen to. you gotta take it for what it is.
if you are talking about just rapping skills, kanye is not even in the top 20 of modern day rappers. I think lupe takes that crown anyways

I really dont agree with you about the "well crafted songs" part.. sure, its not bad, but i wouldn't call it good either.
To me, his "skills" as a musician/producer is more of a "meh" status.

That in combination with the fact the his music has no meaning what so ever, and that he cant sing or rap at all doesn't really make things better.

And Kanye never claimed to have a big message in his music?

Because of gems like so:

"George Bush doesn't care about black people...
They're saying black families are looting and
white families are just looking for food...
they're giving the (Army) permission to shoot us."

"I bring up historical subjects in a way that makes kids want to learn about them. I'm an inspirational speaker. I changed the sound of music more than one time... For all those reasons, I'd be a part of the Bible. I'm definitely in the history books already."

"I'm the voice of a generation."

He is a pretty good example of everything i think is wrong with the modern day music.

yea none of that shit has to do with his actual music though. hes a cocky douchebag. The voice of a generation..... eh.... he is no bob dylan, but he IS an important pop culture and musical figure and has been for about 6 or 7 years now.
If you want to bring up extra curricular stuff that takes away from an artists musical credibility, might i mention "Flavor of Love". lol! i know chuck d was the voice behind public enemy, but flav is not helping anything nowadays.

Not what I meant. I forgot he sampled their song. lol. But I just meant I like how a lot of kanye's music sounds. 808s and heartbreaks for one.

The whole deal about the bible comes from the song "Jesus Walks":

Yo, We at war
We at war with terrorism, racism, and most of all we at war with ourselves
(Jesus Walks)
God show me the way because the Devil trying to break me down
(Jesus Walks with me) with me, with me, with me [fades]

You know what the Midwest is?
Young & Restless
Where restless (Niggas) might snatch your necklace
And next these (Niggas) might jack your Lexus
Somebody tell these (Niggas) who Kanye West is
I walk through the valley of the Chi where death is
Top floor the view alone will leave you breathless Uhhhh!
Try to catch it Uhhhh! It's kinda hard hard
Getting choked by the detectives yeah yeah now check the method
They be asking us questions, harass and arrest us
Saying "we eat pieces of shit like you for breakfast"
Huh? Yall eat pieces of shit? What's the basis?
We ain't going nowhere but got suits and cases
A trunk full of coke rental car from Avis
My momma used to say only Jesus can save us
Well momma I know I act a fool
But I'll be gone 'til November I got packs to move I Hope

Some deep shit right there, ya dig nigga? Uhhhh! Check it!

I just cant understand at all what you see in his music, and the things you mention are the things i think he is the worst at.
To each and his own i guess.

@Notuern do you like any modern pop music?

Pretty much no(A few exceptions here and there.).
I have a hard time finding any music made post 1995 that i find really good.

It just seems like everything these days are made by non-musical people, and then some extremely talented musicians have to try and clean their mess up and turn that piece of shit in to gold(Which always fails.).

Here is a few examples of modern music i think is pretty good:

Kings of Leon have a few pretty good songs as well.. there are probably a few that im forgetting, but as i said: I have a hard time finding anything i like post -95, so I've really lost track of the music scene.
