Dante's Inferno

Never been much of a fan of Iced Earth, but if you want a true exploration of the nature of sin and redemption, read Dante's poetry. I'm currently halfway through Inferno, but you need to read the whole of the Divine Comedy to truely appreciate all the themes. It's a wee bit deeper than anything I've ever come across in metal, or pretty much anywhere else.

Indeed. With metal, the music is the driving force, so lyrics aren't terribly important and are often pushed back as being somewhat unimportant. With poetry like Dante's, however, you have to really have a way with words. The Divine Comedy is some of the best I've ever read, even though being translated into English probably takes away some of the authenticity. But I can't read Italian anyway, so I don't know. I give the whole thing a 10/10. More than any Iced Earth album got from me.
