Dark Passion Play pricetag

Got it for $12.99 from Amazon, I always check there first for stuff because I have prime. After a few listens the album is pretty disappointing though, definitely glad I didn't spring for the collectors's edition.

Ya, I went through the BB pricecheck nightmare too. Turns out they had already sold their one copy of the special edition, so I moved on to my favorite Charlotte music store, Manifest, to pick it up. (BB is closer, figured I'd start there...should have known better!) Manifest had it for $19.99.
I really like the CD and Nightwish continues to impress me. Every CD they put out is different. Some bands start to get repetitive, but Nightwish always brings their sound in a different/modified way. That's talent. This one is definately darker, in some places a little heavier, and I'm no musician so this will be hard to describe, but they use the orchestration a little differently this go round. Rather than just "filling out" the music, it appears to be used more purposefully and actually adds in some cases to the "heaviness" of the album.
I'm torn on voices. I think Annette has a "pretty" voice, and it shines on the softer songs. Tarja had a more powerful voice that fit the heavier things.
And is it just me, or does anyone else feel "dirty" listening to some of these songs that seem a little too overtly to be trashing a former band member? Bye Bye Beautiful for example? Great song, but in the band context, I feel like listening to it makes me seem like I'm picking sides in a family feud!

 Tuomas says BBB isn't meant to be spiteful, but either way it makes for a great tune. Master Passion Greed on the other hand, is a pretty scorching testament against Tarja's husband/manager Marcelo...quite a bit of venom surfacing from that one :)

Okay, I've given it four complete listens. I don't really like it, and I doubt five times will change my mind. The first song is pretty good, but the rest falls flat to me. I'm not putting this on Annette at all. She has a great voice, but the music seems to have lost it's way. Bands change all the time, and I'm sure they will find an audience for the direction they are going now, but I won't be along for the ride. I think my gf got tickets to see them later in the year, so maybe a live performance will change my mind, but I doubt it.
