De Novo Dahl

Because Ron Berman probably signed them I'm guessing.

Ok: Edit, it appears it was not him, unless he was the Sr. A&R, but do not forget that Ronnie B's pop ear is paying the bills for RR with Nickelback, so they are probably trying to diversify to capitilize on that...I prefer them to sign metal bands personally.

I've always understood that Roadrunner has been known to sign artists that are outside of the realm of metal, but De Novo Dahl is so much further from metal than Dresden Dolls or Nickelback that it really surprised me. Haha, now I'm interested in how much success Roadrunner will have with them!

Also, a question...people mention things about Nickelback bringing in a lot of money for the label, which I would agree with. And I understand that a "diversified portfolio" of artists would mean that they can tap into different markets...but here's my question: if Roadrunner is really just a subsidiary of Def Jam/Island, why is it that their financial success depends on signing diverse artists? What's the point of having a metal subsidiary if you are still going to sign pop rock artists under that subsidiary? If it's all the same company at bottom, wouldn't profits from all the other areas of the company be just as meaningful? Perhaps the "out of place" artists just make the Roadrunner subsidiary seem more worthwhile?

Anyway, hopefully my question makes sense.

Also, just read this on the band's bio:

Brought to Roadrunner by A&R man Dave Bason, credited for bringing in much of the label's more recent diversity, De Novo Dahl adds a deeper dimension to the label's multi-faceted direction. "The songs drew me in immediately. They are a mix of uplifting pop songs and weird textured stuff that give you that feeling you get after eating too much candy. What do you expect from a band named after the guy who wrote Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? When I saw the yellow and red striped swimwear from the 1800s, I knew this band was going to be a lot of fun. I love this record!"

Well, I don't know what Dave Bason feels like when he eats too much candy, but I think everyone else gets a stomach ache, regrets it, and remembers to never do it again! Hahaha...great way to describe their new artist.
