martin scorsese did a lot for the betterment of the italian american film genre. i will give him that. he is one of my more favorite famous old country types. i admit it. however, as with mose filmmakers, he has led us to some disappointments. i do think that 'mean streets', 'whose that knocking at my door', and 'alice doesn't live here anymore' are really fantastic. i spent a lot of time studying them for a class and he is very insightful about people's interactions, which is where i think he really wins the general public over.
 
I would only say that Scorscese is overrated in that I know people who think he is the greatest filmmaker EVER, which isn't the case. But he is definitely in the top 40 worldwide ever, and likely a lot higher.
 
he's most definitely a talented dude. I think some people diss on him b/c he makes populist movies, just like with Spielberg. Not to say that Spielberg is a 'great', but he's definitely talented.

as for best ever, I'm not sure you can really name one person who stands above everyone else in every category.
