i always thought widdershins was this insane occult saying as a kid (like "March in a circle, widdershins, and sprinkle the dust into the center"), and when i learned it just meant counterclockwise i was like, "oh".

same with the sign of the evil eye. i thought it was this insane complex symbol and instead it's just like you're playing rock paper scissors without the rock and paper.
