death / black metal mix

what did you use for drums? The cymbals really give it away that's its not real drums. Sounds like a suitable black metal mix to me though. Give some details on the recording process and equipment.

The cymbals sound really strange to me, and the volume of the drums is too low imo. But the guitars sound really nice! +1 on details :)

Actually the cymbals are real. Go figure.

Drums - Two overheads are (Real) paned hard left/right. The kick, snare and toms are replaced from the mic'ed kit. I Used drumagog to create a midi channel then used battery for samples (A little more control this way) for kick snare and toms. Andy's Chimaira Kick, Snare and Toms were used.

Guitars - Quad tracked and reamped with Dual Rectifier 4x12 oversized cab and a single SM57 (used guitar rig for a tube screamer)

Bass - Two Channels DI , one compressed to hell and distorted "guitar rig" the other for low end.

Vox - TLM103 Multiple tracks, Whisper tracks bussed to a distort channel.

Done with Cubase 3 and a Motu896HD. Here is a screen shot of the session if that helps.

Everything sounds pretty good man, good job. In my eyes, the cymbals sound real, but are way too loud. Either that or the rest of the drums definitely need to come up.

From looking at the screenshot, it looks like you've got two of your guitar tracks (J3 and J4) both panned to R85 - should one of them be panned L85 for balance in the stereo field? Or was that intentional?

dill_the_devil, Yea that is intentional in that part of the song. It has some automation on. It pans like that for that instance.

Coneyis, I agree that the beginning is weak. I've been thinking about putting something in there maybe making it a really thin mix at the beginning so when both guitars come in its more powerful? The idea of putting some excerpts of Aleister Crowley the beast speaks has been thrown around too. I'm going to work out the high hats "overheads" I boosted them I think in the 5k range. Maybe I shouldn't have?
More to come.

Thanks again guys!

Guys, I'm thinking of posting the multi tracks for the 3 songs I am doing for this band for everyone to play with once I'm done. (If the band agrees to this). If so, you will have 4 / 6 DI guitars, 2 DI bass tracks, 4 / 6 Vocal Tracks, 2 drum overheads and a midi track for toms snare and kicks with this. If you all are interested I will run it past the guys and will post them on the FTP soon. Let me know if there is interest for this.

that would be awesome! gogo :heh:

hi hat is defenitely too loud
I find the snare sounds too synthetic maybe you should blend in some of the original track...
there defenitely is some pumping going on or an overcompressed feeling, but I can't pinpoint what is....maybe it's the guitars....or it is general
vocals are really nice
good work!

anyway I mostly replied because I was on my knees when I saw your screenshot, do you use a multiple screen setup or? I'd love to work in this resolution on one big screen....
