I don't think it even needs to become an issue of playing god.. I mean, society just wants to remove him from society. Death penalty gives him no chance for redemption, which is OK if he fucked up so bad where society wouldn't even want to see him as a redeemed person.

It's not about removing him from society--a parole-less prison plus isolation can do that. The death penalty is entirely about satisfying the human desire for vengeance. Which is fucked up, and there's no need for it.
