Deathwitch - Violence Blasphemy Sodomy
Runemagick front man (And one time Sacramentum drummer) Terror (Guitar and vocals) is something of an underground figure with his group Deathwitch. Since 1994, Terror has maintained a, what at times seems disjointed, grip on primitive death metal under the moniker of Deathwitch, with Violence Blasphemy Sodomy being the bands latest and sixth release to date (Following on from 2002s Deathfuck Rituals).
The line up has once again changed, with guitarist Slade Doom and drummer Dan Slaughter fulfilling Terrors vision of pure Armageddon. As the accompanying press release states, Deathwitch dont give a fuck what you think. And while the sentiment is noble in itself, its probably a good think they dont care.
Deathwitch is as primitive as death metal can get, while maintaining a groove and catchiness throughout the fourteen tracks on offer. From the relentless drumming in Witch Of Death and Violence Blasphemy, or the great solo work in Abhorrent Sadistic Tormentor and Bitchfinder, Deathwitch do offer something quite different to most out there on the death metal front lines.
The production holds some clarity, which allows the all three members to be clearly heard while maintaining a heavy traditional black metal sound without resorting to a bad recording or necro-sound.
The only real problem about the whole album is that around three quarters of the way through the album, it does get a little tiring. Sure, some of the lyrical content does provide the odd laugh (Was that intentional?), but in order for these album to truly work, they need to be kept to a minimum so that the listener is always wanting more rather that hearing too much and getting bored.
Deathwitch are great at what they do, and if primitive (The key word to use when describing Deathwitch) black metal is what youre after, then Violence Blasphemy Sodomy is going to suit you.
