I was listening and enjoying Deliverance (damn good album - so raw and
uncensored) when I started thinking about solos. The solos on Deliverance
kickass imo.

I think creating own solos are a facinating thing. I like mine to have a
little "theme" of some sort. Themes can be a concept-thing or mere guidelines:

- start off low and climb up the fretboard (haven't heard that one before :Smug:)
- string-skipping to create a Eric Johnson-feel
- long notes and extremely moody (a lot of keytones :))
- incorporate the lowest and highest notes on the fretboard in some way.

I try to come up with new themes for every solo. My latest one was kinda
like the eighties' rock solos (but don't ask me why and shit :loco:).

How do you guys make solos?

Like:
Opeth - Nice melodies and cool passages with limited speed runs
DragonForce - Breath-taking speed runs
David Gilmour - Soulful bendings and melodies
Jimi Hendrix - Experimental and cool
Robin Trower - Bluesy (without dampening? :))

well used to play metal... but not anymore

but to be honest my solo's oscillate between the two... plus some of my ideas too of course ;)

I don't really think about a solo, I just let the riff I want to put it on top off run until I get some spontaneous idea and I keep experimenting over the riff until I'm satisfied with the solo. I'm not really much of a solo guy though, I've barely been playing the guitar for 2 years.

I usually let the rhythm part set the mood. Normally I'll loop the section I'm soloing over and improvise. After a couple minutes I've usually found a cool lick, phrase, etc. and build off it.
My style includes many blues influences. Double stops, held bends, rapid-fire pentatonic phrases, etc. Another thing I like to do is to do a quick run up to a "release" note. I occasionally utilize 3 or 4-string sweeps. Nothing show-offy, it just adds a little something instead of just hitting a note. A little tapping doesn't hurt either :p

speaking of deliverance, the solo in a fair judgement is just amazing, i dont if its mike or peter that plays it, but it is one of their best solos ever imo, beautiful!

Yeah it's mike first, then peter... peter does the third part after mike's two parts.

Love those two first solo-parts by Mike...

Damn I wanna hear more solos those, on this one and wreath, on a new record!

I'm more of a riff guy, i try to keep the riffs more interesting than the solo that way the solo is more of an accent than anything.
