I just managed to get my hands on this little gem yesterday, and I have to agree with Mike Portnoy on this one. The extra "balls & chunk" is a welcome addition.

The music on Black Utopia is a lot more polished than Inertia, and seems to flow a lot more. The production is, once again top notch, and so are the special guest performances. Derek's choice to continually work with Simon Phillips, was the smartest this he has ever done, as this album shows he has come on in leaps and bounds.

Great album.

I really dug Inertia. Who would have thought this cocky, arrogant fuck would have turned out to be such a boon to instrumental music? I mean, the dude is all over the map these days. I don't think he ever had any ambition to be a respected technical musician, he just wanted to get laid but look at him now. Who would have thunk it?
