DI Single notes?

Has anyone ever recorded just single notes through Direct In and then chopped them up to be used through ampsims/coming up with riff ideas?

Joey uses this technique quite a bit? I guess it can help tighten up playing...

Holy crap. lol I think that is a little too tight for my liking, but still, good job editing and tracking. Any tips on how to do it?? When I track at a slower speed, it seems to lose a lot of punch...

I've tried the single note, chop, drag, quantize thing, I know others have and it works for them (I'm speculating a bit here) but when I do it sounds like crap.
