I had this confirmed by a bunch of sources, but Chris Penne, the drummer from Dillinger Escape Plan, is leaving the band to join Coheed & Cambria....this isn't a joke, and I'm as upset as you guys.....

It's still a rumor until confirmed by the band. But this does indeed sadden me. Chris is a great drummer (a personal fav), but if he is willing to leave DEP for Coheed, obviously he's looking for a certain .... cashflow maybe? Ben and Chris have always been the main songwriters in that band, so I think it may have to do with something medical or just personal all together and that any replacement may be more of a touring replacement rather than full time.

Though the two rumored drummers who are set to fill the spot are amazing as well and in no way are going to screw it up.

That sucks to hear. Chris is a very unique drummer, and I think he was a very distinctive element in Dillingers sound. Though, there are a lot of up and coming drummers who will be able to bring something to Dillinger, if indeed Chris has left. Also, I'm curious to hear what Chris will bring to Coheed and Cambria.

Alternative Press Announcement:
Quote:
In August, two-time AP cover stars Coheed And Cambria were temporarily downsized when bassist Mic Todd and drummer Josh Eppard were unable to tour with the band for personal reasons. We have now received word that the split is official: Todd and Eppard are no longer members of Coheed.

"For me, it's kind of hard to say exactly why [they're out of the band]," frontman Claudio Sanchez tells AP. "There were moments where it felt like it could've been creative differences and, maybe just a dislike of touring [on their part]. I think that's really what's brought us to this moment. It started off this summer with Josh giving us a call and saying, 'I can't do this tour.' And, ya know, we couldn't really call it a tour if we didn't get that call. He would always say he couldn't do it. But we would talk about it and he'd be cool with it. But this time around, it didn't work out and he refused to come to Europe. We had MP [ex-Samiam] fill in because it seemed like the logical choice. As we started doing Europe, Mic said that he wanted to endure. But around the time that we hit Barcelona, he decided he could no longer do it as well. So, really, they left on their own and I honestly haven't spoken to them since that day in June. Actually, when we were done with Europe, we got them on the phone and talked and tried to figure something out, but they wanted to go in a different direction. [Guitarist] Travis [Stever] and I have been doing our thing and they haven't reached out to us.

"It's hard to lose them because they played such an important role in this band," Sanchez continues. "It's hard to go through a drastic change like that, but I don't look at it as a bad thing. I felt there were creative differences to some degree most of the time, especially with In Keeping Secrets and Good Apollo..., it felt like Josh and Mic weren't even at the studio--and honestly, they weren't. They'd come and play their parts and that was about it. Not to discredit them, but it's just going to allow for a freer and more interesting process."

Coheed fans, fear not: The band are in no danger of breaking up. Sanchez informs AP that he and Stever have already begun rehearsals for the band's new album, with a surprising addition behind the kit.

"Right now, we've just started rehearsing for the new album," he says. "Matt Williams [of pre-Coheed band Jumblehead] is on bass and we actually got Chris Pennie from Dillinger Escape Plan on drums. We're kind of toying with that lineup and it's hard to say if that will be the new foundation of Coheed And Cambria. We're just kind of feeling them out and they're feeling us out and it's hard to say what the final outcome will be. But I'm looking at this as a new beginning and not a downer. There were so many ideas I wanted to do with this band that I felt like I wasn't going to get full cooperation from everyone and just kind of kept them to myself. Now it feels like a new beginning and I actually kind of get goose bumps when I think about it."

The band's new lineup plan on heading into the studio in early 2007 with plans for a late-2007 release.

Well in the interview Claudio says they are still "toying with that lineup" so you never know. This is all I could fine on it.

they are in the studio recording...that doesn't mean he isn't leaving. they are looking at 2 or 3 guys as possible replacements. I know some guys that work at a few labels and I've heard the same news from all of them

yeah, thats the first I saw that press release, so now I have a little less confidence that he is permanently leaving...I'll talk to my friends tomorrow and see whats up

I agree that the drumming chaos is what helps make DEP unique. Hopefully he will not leave. I can't imagine many people turning down an opportunity to play with Coheed since they are probably raking in much more ca$h than DEP.

There are some really cool things to Coheed. This band is probably one of the "skeletons in my closet". I do enjoy listening to them. I can only listen to the CD once a month at most, but sometimes its a refreshing break from pounding my head in. I usually find myself listening to Alkaline Trio, The Used, old AFI, Tiger Army and Pennywise about the same time I listen to Coheed.

Back on topic, if this is indeed true, then that will be a great addition. More power and fury from Chris' DEP experience can only better Coheed.

don't want to be a dick, but I couldn't help myself.....I told you so:

Dillinger Escape Plan has officially acknowledged the departure of drummer Chris Pennie, who will apparently dedicate his time to Coheed and Cambria. Taking his place is drummer Gil Sharone, who has previously performed with Fishbone and Plus-44, among others. Here's an introduction video, complete with some sweet Sopranos action. Meanwhile, DEP will release a new album this fall titled "Ire Works." Here's a statement from the band:

"Know that what we are in the process of recording will be everything we have ever been capable of, and now more. This last year, and how we have gotten through it and to the place we are now, will define all of our lives for a long time. You will hear it in the music and words when you hear this album, and when you see us play live you will see the newfound energy that we now have from making it through all this together. Some of you are new, some of you have been with us for a long time. Regardless, we have a long way left to go, and the thing that we share together besides the music is making it through obstacles in our lives. We have overcome everything from multiple member changes in the early years, members suffering physical impairment or injury that has made it impossible to continue playing, and financial, physical, personal, and internal problems that many bands would never make it through. We take forever to put out records, and put everything we have into them. This band goes beyond just writing music and lyrics for us, it exists in every aspect of our lives 24 hours a day, and everything we experience and go through ends up going into this band in some way. When we see familiar faces on tour, we know that in the time since we have seen you last, you have had to deal with a lot in your own life just to get there again. Life is not easy, but it is the overcoming of obstacles and the amount of fight we have inside of us that will define us. We are going through all this together in some way or another. Please welcome this new time for us. The past was great, but the future will be greater I promise, if every day we didn't know for a fact that it would be, we wouldn't continue. We love you all for sticking though us through all of this. You'll hear it and see us soon."

I saw this on Lambgoat.com, it'll probably be on Blabbermouth soon enough

Gil is at this time only a studio musician, so who knows what will happen when they roll out on tour. I've actually seen Gil more times live than Chris, and while I love Chris - Gil is an excellent drummer and I have no doubt he will keep things rolling along. DEP has managed to keep going despite every blow (first Brian's injury preventing him from playing guitar, and now Chris leaving the band), so I have hope.
