Dio

The first three IMO. "Holy Diver", "Last In Line", "Sacred Heart".

BTW, welcome to UMOS

+ don't forget the get the Rainbow albums with Dio!

Well, he asked "What's his best solo stuff?"
But you are right! The old Rainbow albums should be included in any Dio fan collection. I can't believe I completely forgot. /me slaps forehead! :)

I would recommend "Rainbow - Live in Germany"

Talk about old school! I remember seeing this on TV back in 1976! They toured Germany and the German TV station West Deutsche Fernsehen [WDF] showed it on a program called Rock Palast [Rock Palace]! That program still exists.

I am eagerly awaiting the release of that particular show on DVD since the WDR are releasing all their old stuff on DVD.

Thanx :) maybe a best of compilation might also do... I was a bit sceptical of Dio first when I hadn't explored his works since he had bad-mouthed Sabbath hehe, but I saw him live in Wacken last year and maaaaan it was fun!
P.S. it's ok if you include Rainbow

I Agree with Vern and Hawk the first three solo albums and Rainbow and Sabbath.
Is their any Elf cds in the world ? I would love to check out his first band!

The Elf cds are out there if you look for 'em!

But Elf isn't Dio's first band -- there are recordings of "Ronnie and the Red Caps" circa 1958, and "Ronnie and the Prophets" circa 1963. You definately gotta check these out for novelty's sake! His sound was just a bit different back then...

Holy Diver, Last In Line, Strange Highways and Killing The Dragon are all you'll need. I wouldn't bother with anything else from his solo stuff, but that's me. And get the first three Rainbow albums!!!! He's the singer on those and they're essential, especially the last two, "Rising" and "Long Live Rock and Roll"!

A compilation is likely to contain quite a bit from his first three releases. My order is the same as Wyvern's. "Holy Diver" and "The Last in Line" are almost neck and neck. Both are fantastic releases. Sacred Heart is good and so is "Strange Highways." SH actually sounds completely different than most Dio (as it's more heavy and aggressive) but good in it's own right. As far as compilations, he has one called "Stand Up and Shout: The Dio Anthology." It has a few Elf tracks, a few Rainbow Tracks, many Sabbath tracks and of course many Dio tracks. It has 29 tracks on it.

I used to like more, but these days Holy Diver is the only one I'm really into. The only one that still holds up in my eyes. Dio is a god though. Between the Rainbow and Sabbath stuff (and Holy Diver) he hit one of the best stretches in metal.

Oh, and I saw him twice on the Maiden/Motorhead tour and he was great. He did mostly great tunes, including Stargazer (my personal Rainbow fave). I really think it's true that he's 63 or something, which makes the shows all that much more amazing. How does he do it. Dorian Gray I guess.

Hehe, he's born in 1949, so he's 56 :loco:
I don't know if I´ll get the compilation with the Sabbath songs, but Very beast of Dio looks good http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:rxk0iklabb19
meh..or maybe I´ll buy some of his first CDs since my brother has got a best of CD ("Diamonds" I think)

Dio's birth year has always been in debate. If you listen to the recordings that are alledgedly from 1958, he sure sounds older than a 9-year-old kid. I'd bet he's at least 60.

Dehumanizer's good -- one of the "heavier" efforts that Dio's undertaken. The vox come of a bit harsh on that album, so I don't think the material is the best use of his talents. Definately worth checking out though.

Sure they are, I've seen them several times, never picked them up tho.

As for Rainbow I didn't said anything because he aske for solo material, but DEFINITIVELY are albums that have to be in a collection.

Wait til you hear 'Kill The King', 'Man On The Silver Mountain' and 'A Light In The Black'

Is an amazing album. Set in between Tony Martin Era, and having the same line-up as "Mob Rules", "Dehumanizer" is one of the heaviest album by the almighty Sabbath, check it out you'll love it.

HOW AND THE SHIT IS THAT IF HE WAS BORN IN 49??? That wouldve made him 9 years old???? 42 maybe because still thats only 16 or 17, which Micheal Kiske was close to that age when he started Helloween. But whatever. He rocks.
