For any of you out there who have never heard of Cypriot power-metal group, Diphtheria, now is your chance, as their first full-length album To Wait For Fire is finally available to buy (although it is limited edition, so I would suggest if you like the sound of them to try and buy it soon before it goes). Album-wise, the sound is good, they obviously draw a great deal of inspiration from earlier music released by metal bands such as Saxon, Iron Maiden, Helloween, Testament, AC/DC, Kiss and the like. The music is fairly straight forward; Diphtheria opt for the style of simple, classic guitar, drum and bass riffs, overlain with some distinctly late 80’s and early 90’s-esque soloing. Their sound is complimented by Nicholas Leptos’ impressive, operatic and decidedly Bruce Dickinson and Dave Mustaine influenced vocals. There’s nothing too complex, just good steady rock, though this may present a bit of a problem. The band are talented and good at what they do, but they seem to be a little too heavily influenced by hugely popular groups from a slightly earlier era, which may not appeal to many fans outside of this genre of metal. If you’re a die-hard power-metal fan, then you’ll probably enjoy Diphtheria, but personally, I suggest they should step outside of the box a little bit more and see what they can push themselves to do musically.
