Do metal drummers actually exist?

I've been trying to put a band together for at least a couple years now and to this day I've yet to find a drummer. I've tried craigslist, facebook, musician classified ads, music store bulletin boards, local shows, etc in two different (larger) cities, and the only response I've ever got was some kid who drinks non-stop and can barely keep a steady 4/4 beat. I just don't know what to do next. Do I play live with a drum machine, or do I search even farther away? What would you guys do?

It's tough in some areas. The band I'm tracking now had to hire a drummer for the recording since they weren't able to find one locally for almost a year.

Now that mixing is almost done, they've found a drummer... and are losing one of their guitarists!

Find a drummer in a music school and then teach him how to play drums. This was the way I started with my band :D And now he is a pretty good drummer after 5 years... haha ;) But I guess this is still better than having no drummer at all.

^ thats about the quickest way to make you want to give up I can think of

if you're looking to just make an album, hire someone to track the parts or program them and make your album. You can then use that as a means to find people. If they can't play what you have, don't waste your time. If you're looking to actually have a band together to play shows and all that other shit, see my reply above.

Do NOT waste your time taking someone who can't play very well and trying to teach them how unless they are playing up to your needed standard within a couple months. I speak from experience ... WAY too much experience in this

Ring up local drum teachers and ask if they have any students into your sort of music and that have some talent ..

Seems this way around me. Been searching for a vocalist for like 8 months now. We're trying to find someone who has experience and someone who we don't have to spend 6 months working with just in hope that they start to sound better.

I guess my reply was not the best idea, but when I started this, I was only 14 years old :D Maybe that's the reason it worked out now ... There are only really few people who can play really good at this age.

I sure can understand that when you are older, this way is wayy too frustrating and exhausting ;)

I'm 29 and SERIOUSLY wish I was like 15-18 again. It's MUCH harder to find devoted musicians when everyone is buying houses and paying mortgage/rent/child support, having kids, working, schedule conflicts, etc.

Don't wait on band members to start writing songs. Go ahead and get some tunes together and THEN ask people if they want to play them. Before even booking a show, track an album, see if the musicians can handle the tedium - if they complain the whole time, look for someone else. After the album is done, then start looking into playing out.

I've always done bands backwards and it fucking sucks.

It gets worse at 37. If we're lucky we practice 3-4 times a month, if that. Something's always being cancelled due to night school, a kid's school performance, etc.

Around here, it's not uncommon to see guys playing in 2-3 different bands just so lineups are filled out.

I've got a 6-song EP in the works that's nearly complete except for vocals. Believe me, I've been there before too. Not fun.

Some good news, though. One of my friends might be up for it; I had no idea he even played the drums. Crossing my fingers...

Speaking of finding members. You know how hard it is to find a band that isn't full of shitty players? Or lol one that's got a retard middle man who can't fucking communicate (seriously I was interested in joining said band until I had douche middle man say he was in charge, WHAT THE FUCK)? Or doesn't bother posting more than a "hey we are a metal band that plays stuff like Lamb of God and we need a bass player" on craigslist?

Seriously, finding a band is just as frustrating as looking for a member if your trying to get a band off the ground.

In most cases I'm finding it's a complete show of fucking laziness on the bands part, but that's just my experience around here. Shit fucking sucks.

Said band with middle man just drops the band name then says "contact me" blah blah, when you do contact him he is a complete incompetent retard. To be expected I guess, being he is a promoter as well.

I know dat feel. My band has been trying to get a drummer for about a year or so, and it's been crazy. We know one drummer who even likes metal, and he can't do extended double bass. We've had to start putting out ads, hopefully it'll work out.

The drummers were the first victims of the machines. I have played with one really good drummer in my musical journeys, that was in 1996. The rest of them were easily replaced by a machine.

i spent so long looking for a drummer here, gave up in the end and started to learn myself. having much more fun playing drums than guitar, i just gotta get good enough to play along with the songs i write lol
