Do you beleive in extraterrestrial life ?

Infinitely big universe (yes we can only see as far as about 16 billion light years), mostly made of the same matter, most stars have planets, hydrogen extremely abundant everywhere and oxygen not very rare too = water.

We only need a planet with all 3 classic states of water (at just the right distance to its star) and some uber mixer like mass movement of the water (dynamic weather system) and life will emerge sooner or later.

No. I believe life is precious, and only ever existed or will ever exist on earth. I also think the earth is only 5000 years old. And I fuck my sister.

How is this a touchy subject? Let's do some logic:

1. If the universe is as big as our scientists say it is, then the odds say there is very likely intelligent life forms elsewhere in the universe, more intelligent than us. This is backed scientifically. Not only should there be plenty of intelligent life elsewhere, there should have been intelligent life elsewhere a long time ago (billions of years ago) as well. (The odds of there not being intelligent life elsewhere in the universe is so bad that trying to make an argument for it would be less empirical than believing every word in the Bible…it is more likely that the damn Christians are right and abortion is bad and gays are bad and we are all going to hell anyway etc.)

2. If there was intelligent life elsewhere in the universe in the past, our SETI telescopes should have discovered evidence of their existence by now

3. Based on 1 and 2, at least one of the following scenarios must be true:

-The universe is nothing like what is appears to be
-There were or are other intelligent life forms elsewhere but they are voluntarily hiding from us, or voluntarily swept up their tracks.

Correct me if I am wrong. But I think you have no empirical grounds to you deny both of these scenarios. At least one has to be true.

intelligent life? or biological enzymes?

either way, i believe in proof... simply saying, "there HAS to be other intelligent life in the universe, we can't be the only one!!!" is not proof.

the observable universe is approximately 13.5 billion lightyears outside of our earth and visible to us at present day. yet we have not found any signs of intelligent life or planets capable of sustaining life like earth. there are similar planets that have recently been discovered but there is still no actual evidence of life elsewhere.

so, the long answer - Q: "do i believe in extraterrestrial life?" - A: not really!

i do support the research because i think it is important to the growth of human expedition and discovery however, i am afraid that we are going to find out that other life out there might not be as "peaceful" as we want them to be.

Exactly. But if you don't believe there is intelligent life out there then you should throw out all you know about science. There is no way that the universe is what our scientists say it is (ie 13 billion years old, speed of light is ___km/s, etc) because the same observations that give us those conclusions can also be made to conclude that there is clearly other intelligent life out there.

To quote from a somewhat terrible movie: "I'd say if it is just us... seems like an awful waste of space."

Yes. I do believe there is other life out there.

i think what you are saying is ...other life exists because we do?

well... if i DID believe in other life, i would have to ignore virtually every effort we have made to prove that there is none (so far).

i will believe it when i see it. until then, we are the only one's here and i am content with that because there are over 7 billion people here and tons of cool shit to do. :err:
