I doubt science fiction still has the influence it once had. In it's day, in the 60's for example, it provided a means of social commentary that exposed the prejudices of humans, questioned what made us human, and how we should treat those that are different.

Sci-fi often explores our fears of the new and unknown. For that reason, sci-fi will always be relevant and have some influence. But is it as influential as it once was? No.

50s - 70s were the prime decades for Science Fiction.... the thought of space exploration was new, so more people were staring in to the sky wondering "what if..." Not so much anymore.

I still love that show. Pay attention to the brief scene with Zathras. That scene comes back.
