Do you miss old Sonata Arctica?

I'll be even more rudimentary & brutally honest with my explanation than others here. My high horse done galloped off...

I get bored with the same disc/songs, but not style.

If I crave a particular sound/era of a band that is no longer being produced, then I'm more than happy with a clone band provided they are quality. I can always challenge my musical boundaries, etc by checking out other stuff.
.

I couldn't agree more. And really, it's nearly impossible to truly be a carbon copy. Bands often start out sounding like, but not quite exactly like, other bands. Sonata was compared to Stratovarius early in their career. Then they expand their sound and become unique, if they're good.

A big reason these bands get attention in the first place is because the band that used to own that sound moved away from it and the fans weren't ready to let it go.

That's a rad argument bro. I didn't think of it that way which is is why I ask. I guess I just don't personally look at records like that. If I get tired of a record personally, it's usually because my brain craves something else, but I never think to myself "Metallica sucks now, but I sure love those first 4 albums -- is there anyone playing like them nowadays?" I guess I'm just weird like that. Opinions opinions!

A lot of people are like that. Most are like that in my experience. Once they've heard a style, they'll go back to the old songs of that style, but they have little interest in new stuff of that style. That's one reason there are legions of 80s metal fans who still pick up "Best of" sets, but who you can't get to sit down for five minutes to hear an Edguy song. Even though Edguy at their most derivative are far more clever in their songwriting than the vast majority of 80s bands, IMO.

I'm one of those folks who loves old SA but found their new albums to be kind of a miss. I'm not sure why! It's not BAD music, by any means.. it just didn't catch me, like their old albums.

Sonata Arctica was the first metal band I ever got into (aside from stuff like Metallica). They will always hold a special place in my heart. But Unia and all the albums after that....pass.

Ill say the same thing about Sonata as I said about Edguy. They can choose to be a grade A power metal band, or a grade B prog band(or in edguy's case, a hard rock band).

Sonata's last two albums have been decent prog, whereas their first four albums were outstanding power metal. But if I want prog, why am I going to buy a Sonata album? I can buy 20-30 better prog albums in any given year.

I don't completely hate Days like I do Unia, but neither holds a candle to old SA. While I still like those albums, I pretty much got bored with them I guess, as I haven't listened to them in a couple of years.

Stand corrected on them, then. But Impaled for sure; got their sound right from the Heartwork album (and I'm not complaining...I think I might even like Mondo Medicale better than Heartwork :-o)

Interesting. I have no problem with bands strongly inspired by other bands as long as I like the tunes. I enjoy a great many bands who worship at the altar of Chuck Schuldiner. I love me a good Depeche Mode Era Soilwork clone (though I don't like Depeche Mode Era Soilwork... go figure.)

Anyway, though I love Necroticism and Heartwork, I have never been able to get into any of the Carcass clone bands. I have tried em all. I just found their riffage to be rather dull. Maybe I will revisit Mondo Medicale.

I don't give a fuck what anybody else on here says, I still think that both Unia and Days of Grey kicked some serious ass. That being said, this Sunrise track does kick ass and would love to hear more from this outfit, Sonata Arctica knock-offs or not.
