No, I don't mean the thought mechanism, I'm talking about Propellerhead's Virtual Studio software, Reason.
I just got it and it's ultra slick. It has tons of modules, like samplers, 8-track mixers, synth modules, effects processors, drum modules, loop matrices, the whole nine yards.

The flexibility of it is fantastic. You can configure all the rack gear in any order you like, actually plugging in the leads from module to module as you see fit.

Everything on it has tons of features, just like their real-life conter parts, and the graphics make using the modules just like using the real thing.

I just created a backing track to the guitar solo section from one of my band's songs and improvised a solo over it. I've uploaded it to mp3.com, I'm just waiting for it to be approved. Once it's there, I'll put a link to it. You can check out what it's able to do from there. I used all the reverbs and choruses and whatnots from that package. They're first class.

I'm still learning, so the file isn't amazing sounding, but once I get more familiar with what it can do, I'm going to make a few complete tracks of my own with it.

If anyone else has it, there's a couple of things I want to know about it, and some help would really be appreciated.

Cheers.

Yeah, here's the link, Dave: http://www.propellerheads.se

You can download a trial version of the software at www.cnet.com but I'm not sure what the demo includes or how big the file is. It's probably huge; Reason has over 500mb of samples.

One of the big benefits of this software is it's own file type is really small. So, if you're working on a song and you want to mail it off to someone else who uses Reason so they can add their parts, it only takes a second to send it, even with tons of samplers, mixers, effects and whatnot.

Hey there, Dave.

Did you know there's a free version of Pro Tools available? I downloaded it yesterday. I'll be using it to record some stuff. It isn't as comprehensive as the "pay for" version, but it's still pretty damn good.
I haven't used Pro Tools before, so it's going to take me a while to learn how to use it. But now that I have that and Reason, I'll be able to make some pretty neat quality stuff. The stuff I have on my mp3.com page is fairly simple so far. But I'll be able to really improve the quality with this.

I don't suppose it's too useful to you, since you have the full version, but if you're interested, I can get you a link for the site to download it from.
I also got given a link to a really cool forum dedicated to recording on PC and outside of the studio environment. You can find almost anything out there.

Yeah that's a cool link man...I have a link to that site up on our site as well. ;)

Pro Tools is definitely an awesome program. Chris H was using the free version on his home PC, unfortunately, I can't use the free version since it does not work with Digidesign Hardware...but I've seen the features, and it's just about the same as the retail-version. I really haven't had a chance to try Reason yet, seeing as we've been pretty tied up with the re-mix and re-master of "Rooms of Anguish" Now that we have time, I'll be trying different programs out. I just got my hands on Nuendo (Surround Edition) and am looking forward to playing with the 5.1 surround feature on this one. ;)
By the way...I finally got a chance to check out your MP3 page....pretty awesome stuff there Lee!! Very very impressive..."Fire" definitely has a Vai/Satriani/Petrucci-ish feel in the soloing...I really enjoyed listening to it. I also like the 16th notes unison lines, then when the flange kicks in, it give a very sweet stereo effect. Let me know when you've got more tunes up there to check out.

Hey there Dave. Wow, thanks for the kind words, man!!! Coming from a guitar player I truly respect like you, that is ultra fucking awesome!!!
It's a pretty shoddy recording, and I'd only just figured out how to record and use Reason when I got it, so I was just messing around. I kept it 'cause the solo seemed to "sing".

Wow. You just made my day, man!!

About Pro-Tools, I'm just working through learning how to use it. If it's pretty similar to the full retail version, that's fantastic. I hope I can use it to good effect.
And one of the problems with Reason is it's not so good to create music on (well, it's great for dance music, but you'll need to add to it for other genres), but it's studio modules are really cool, which could make it very cool for mixing things and whatnot.
It's pretty expensive, so it might be worth taking a look at the demo version before buying it.
If you do get it and you want to try out some more Rock-type drum sounds, I have some really cool samples that I downloaded from a site. I can either mail them to you or give you the link if you want them.

btw, call me stupid, but I only just figured out what your quote means

Thanks again, Dave. You rule!!
