A dog with a nose for pizza left on a stovetop apparently turned on the range inside a Ken Del apartment late Tuesday night causing a fire to start in unit No. 42.

As Shawnee firefighters raced to the complex at 101 Ken Del Drive, residents in other units evacuated the building.

The tenant in a nearby unit called 911 when smoke came through her ventilation system -- then smoke detectors began to sound in the eight-unit building.

Shawnee Fire Battalion Chief Jim VanAntwerp said the cause of the fire was a pizza box that ignited on the stove.

Firefighters and the tenant believe the dog inside, Sydney, pushed the stove's "on" button. The dog's owner wasn't home at the time of the fire.

The door of Unit No. 42 was kicked in, and Sydney was freed. She was hot, but fine. No injuries were reported.

WHITEHORSE - A pedestrian in a Whitehorse suburb was taken aback Tuesday night when a dog drove by in a red pickup truck.

Police say a person was out for a walk when the truck with a black Labrador at the wheel passed by.

When police arrived, the truck was in the middle of Thompson Road in Granger, blocking traffic. The dog was still behind the wheel.

The RCMP went door to door in the neighbourhood, and eventually found the owner. He was was watching the World Cup hockey game with a friend.

Police say the dog likely knocked the truck into gear causing it to roll down the hill.

There were no injuries or damages, and no indication from police they plan to charge the owner.

Man Shoots Wife, Mistakes Her for Monkey

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - A Malaysian man shot and killed his wife after he mistook her for a monkey picking fruit in a tree behind their house, the New Straits Times said on Wednesday.

The man, 70, is being held by police for causing death through recklessness after he fired a shotgun at what he thought was a monkey in a mangosteen tree on Monday, the newspaper said.

His wife, 68, had used a ladder to climb into the tree and was picking the tropical fruit when she was shot. She was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital, the paper said. The couple lived in central Malaysia and had raised 13 children.
