i remember my dad telling me this story about how they trained a bunch of dogs over in vietnam (they not being my dad but like the military) to find bombs and attack vc and they gave a bunch of the dogs to my dad's group. the dogs often were killed and saved a lot of lives also.
after my dad's tour, they wouldnt let him take the dog home. they shot it in the back and left it to die.

(i should add, my dad didn't shoot it. a seargent did. my dad still like, gets all teary eyed about it)

anyway, read the book 'meditations in green'. it has some stuff about military animals in it.
