don't ship outside us

USPS is where it's at, I've shipped so much stuff overseas with it (Dual Rectifier to France, guitars in hard cases to Sweden and the UK, bunch of small shit to Romania, Brazil, god knows where else), and the rates are fantastic, at least compared to UPS/Fedex - I guess it's true that tracking isn't possible, but hey, that's not my problem! :loco: (and more importantly, it hasn't been an issue thus far, and I always get insurance). And the same with things being held on customs on their end, presumably the buyer knows the risks (and the customs form is easy enough for me to fill out, and I usually just charge a little extra when shipping internationally to cover the minimal hassle)

I agree; I *almost* ran into a problem because some dude in china didn't get his item in a week or whatever and he was getting pissed, but it eventually got there. As long as they understand that you can't be responsible for anything once it's outside the USA, it's great.

for international shipping usps is the less expensive , it offers tracking as other private companies. but the buyer when receive his stuff via postal way it is the less safe way and also sometimes take a lot of time
so for resume:
for buyer :
usps : less expensive, tracking, low taxes . but slow, less safe
private companies: (usps, dhl, fedex and others) : tracking, fast, safe . but expensive, sometimes very high custom taxes

USPS actually has international tracking.

Sure, but it's usually not updated for like 2 weeks while it's in transit from the shipping hub in the US, to the customs department in the other country. Who knows where the hell it is for the rest of the time

lelahel, as you can see there can be plenty of reasons why some sellers might not want to ship international. Even if lazyness is ONE of them i dont think its an insult. If im a seller and i can sell my item easily both ways ill choose the one with the less hassle. So i can understand people that do that whether its laziness or a thousand other valid or not reasons. On the other hand some people make some good money taking care of international buyers, and they are used/prepared for that.

What i am saying is it doesnt matter why people choose to or not do that, you will not be able to change their mind. The bottom line is - being someone in the same shoes as you - you can always find a way to get your stuff, you just have to be patient. I have had almost ALL my gear shipped from the US and i have a lot.

The key has always been patience wether it is to find the people who want to sell you it or wait for your item to arrive. But looking at the bright side, i would be putting some money aside while im waiting so that i can afford the next piece of gear as soon as i receive the stuff i am waiting for; that way i can always be broke :)

Best of luck.

I work at FedEx Ground and, international shipping or not, I would NEVER send my musical equipment through there lol. UPS may have similar conditions, dunno. A lot of the people loading the packages just don't really care... Myself included sometimes.

I ship EVERYTHING through the USPS. It's safer, and it's usually a hell of a lot cheaper too. FedEx/UPS are tailored to businesses that ship in bulk and get special deals on it.

Another point for Canadians: If you're close to a border town like Windsor or Niagara Falls, you can get things shipped via UPS to a UPS STORE in downtown Detroit or Niagara Falls NY, (usually for free from the bigger music retailers like Musicians Friend) and go pick it up yourself. I've got a few friends who use this method often & have never had a problem.

Let me show you how it can be a nightmare for the store (and the costumer).

I order an audio interface from Sweetwater and ask them to send it to me through USPS (less taxes than FedEx).
It arrives.
I pay the abusive import taxes to my country customs.
I use it and discover that it has a faulty hardware.
I email the SweetWater costumer support.
They tell me to send it back to them using their FedEx account (they pay the shipping) that they are going to send me a replacement (also at their expenses).
I do it.
They receive the faulty one.
The new one arrives.
The customs from my country wants me to pay for the import taxes AGAIN, even when it´s clearly specified that it´s a warranty replacement.
As instructed by Sweetwater, I refuse the package and send an email to them.
They say they will handle it.

So, take a look at the pain in the ass Sweetwater is having just because they´ve decided to ship to a country with a shitty government like mine.
They already paid the FedEx shipping of the replacement and the return of the faulty one. Now they will have to struggle with my government to suspend the taxation of the new package.
It takes major guts to sell to any country and I´m glad Sweetwater care to go through all this trouble. I wouldn´t.

I shipped a guitar to Brazil once, and made the mistake of going with USPS. The guitar made it to the border just fine, but past that, not so much. It arrived at the buyer's place in about 12 pieces, and the postal service told me that once it leaves the country, it's out of their hands.

Fortunately it was just a cheap beater, but I was still out $300. It ran me ~75 bucks (iirc, I don't remember the exact price) to ship USPS, and would have been twice that if I went with UPS. In the end, I was out $375, so lesson learned. These days I just don't do it.

The main reason not to... is paypal rules. Paypal requires tracking and signature confirmation. Which means USPS express mail or other parcel international service. However, this means the buer neesd to pay INSANE prices for shipping. I shipped an FX unit to Norway. I charged the buyer $55 and he complained a lot. Actual shipping cost ended up being $72.

And dont forget ebay NOW also takes a commission on shipping charges also :-(

There´s a problem here. You may pay a small difference between the courrier (UPS/FedEx) and the mail (USPS) service, but when the package arrives in Brazil the difference for the buyer will be huge. Customs taxes 60% if it comes by mail, and 100% if it comes by courrier service. And that´s over the total value (product + shipping).
