BraveWords caught up with Germany’s metal queen Doro Pesch recently at the Bangers Open Air in São Paulo, Brazil, and she talked about her friendship with Motörhead legend Lemmy Kilmister, who passed away on December 28th, 2015, four days after his 70th birthday. A few months after his tragic death, it was reported that by his request, bullets filled with his ashes, were sent to his most beloved friends, including Doro.
“He was my best friend, along with Ronnie James Dio,” she begins in a somber tone. “Lemmy was like, the first person who I met in England when we (Warlock) played Castle Donington, the legendary Monsters of Rock festival (on August 16th, 1986). I was going towards the stage and I had no idea that it was such a big festival. I thought, maybe a couple of thousand people will be there. And then suddenly I saw 80,000 people there waiting. And I was walking towards the stage, I was so nervous, and then I ran into Lemmy. And Lemmy, he gave me a hug, he said, ‘Okay, Doro, knock ’em dead, do a great show!’. And he said, ‘Are are you shaking?’, I said, ‘Yes, man, I’m so nervous!’. And then he gave me a kiss on my head, on my forehead. And somebody took a photo. One time, I was going through my record collection and I wanted to listen to a Motörhead album. I dug out the No Sleep ’til Hammersmith album, and it had an inner sleeve, and there was this photo, the black and white photo where Lemmy gave me a kiss on my head. So I thought, ‘Ah, that’s so awesome!’, so I wrote him a letter. I cut out this picture, and I wrote a letter to the management, and I said, ‘Hey, Lemmy, it’s me Doro, the German girl from Warlock, maybe you remember me. It would be awesome to do something together.’ A couple of months later, I got a phone call from Lemmy, and he said, ‘Hey, Doro, I got your letter. Let’s do it. Come to L.A.’ So, Lemmy was actually my very first partner, in 2000 we had the Calling The Wild album in the making, and we did ‘Love Me Forever and Alone Again’. That was the song Lemmy wrote, and the guitar was so soulful. Yeah, and then we became friends, and from ever since, he was my best friend. I was at his funeral actually, and I was super sad, even though people tried to, you know, to celebrate like the Lemmy vibe. There was whiskey and all. A couple of months later, I got a package and there was Lemmy’s ashes in it.”
BraveWords: “How did you receive it?”
Doro: “Yeah, it was a little package, and it went to Germany, to my mom’s house, actually. My mom called me, and she said, ‘There’s something here for you, it came from L.A.’. And I said, ‘Mom, open it’. She said, ‘No, I have a feeling you should open it.’ She just had this feeling. I said, ‘Well, you can open it,’ but she said, ‘No, no, I can’t do it.’ So I went to my mom’s house, and I opened the package, and there was a beautiful letter in it, and the bullet with Lemmy’s ashes in it. Oh, man, that’s probably the most precious thing I’ve ever gotten in my whole entire life. And I have it in a safe place so no one can take it away. At the moment, I’m doing something, I’m doing a record for Lemmy. It’s called Rock To Death, In Memory Of Lemmy Kilmister, and I put all the Lemmy duets on it and I wrote some songs for Lemmy, about the great times we spent together, and there are some Motörhead covers, like ‘Rock And Roll’ and ‘Love Me Like A Reptile’, all that stuff. And of course, ‘Love Me Forever’, the Lemmy duet, and the live version when Lemmy came to my anniversary. For the 20 year anniversary he came to my hometown in Düsseldorf, and we performed ‘Love Me Forever’ live, that will be on it as well. I want to put it out in the fall, around wintertime, because Lemmy would have been 80, it would be his 80th birthday this year.”
