Is fast downpicking really necessary? I am really into metal, but my downpicking is not that good, I cannot play Master Of Puppets downpicking, but I can alternate picking. Would it be worth the time to practice it?
I think ppl usually have the opposite problem. They just down pick everything then when they get to fast stuff they find it impossible because just one direction is quite slow. Its not so important, but can be cool .
I have another problem. My guitar new costs around $240. I am practicing alternate picking, 3-note-per-string runs. I am going really slow, but I hear a lot of harmonics when I place my finger before I play the note, it is a really high pitched harmonic, almost unnoticable, but really annoying. Is this because of my cheap fretboard? Or is there something related to muting that I am not doing?
Could be a bowed neck. Take it into your local shop and have it set up correctly. Even an El Cheapo will play nice and clean when set up properly.
My first guitar was an Aria Pro RS Stray Cat I bought at a mall music store back in '84. I later upgraded to EMG pickups and a Kahler Flat Mount tremolo. After it came back from the tech, the set up was f'in' brilliant. My guitar teacher played it once and wanted my guitar in a bad way. Just to show you that price is not always fully representative of quality. Much like you can upgrade a Honda Civic to run sub-10-second quarters, you can upgrade a guitar to be a shred machine.
