Progressive metal titans Dream Theater brought their 40th Anniversary Tour to Toronto’s Coca-Cola Coliseum on March 11, delivering a career-spanning set that thrilled die-hard fans. The excitement in the air was intense not just for the milestone tour, but for the long-awaited return of Mike Portnoy reclaiming his throne behind the kit after a 14-year absence.

The night kicked off with a powerful “Metropolis Pt. 1: The Miracle And The Sleeper,” as a large curtain dropped from the stage and immediately setting the tone for a show deeply rooted in the band’s history. Act I continued with selections from Scenes From A Memory, including “Overture 1928” and “Strange Déjà Vu,” before diving into heavy hitters like “The Mirror” (with a killer “Lie” outro solo), “Panic Attack,” and the soaring “Under A Glass Moon.” The acoustic-driven “Hollow Years” was played in its raw 1996 demo version, adding a nostalgic touch.

Act II opened with a stunning medley video weaving themes from every Dream Theater album showcasing their 40-year journey. The new songs off Parasomnia, “Night Terror” and “Midnight Messiah” made their way into the set, alongside fan favorites like “Stream Of Consciousness” and the breathtaking epic “Octavarium.”

As the encore began, a clip from The Wizard Of Oz—”There’s No Place Like Home”—played, signaling the arrival of “Home” and “The Spirit Carries On,” both met with an emotional singalong. The night ended with the timeless “Pull Me Under,” sending the Toronto crowd into a frenzy as every fan sang along.

Portnoy’s return added a fiery intensity, and the band’s chemistry was undeniable. After four decades, Dream Theater still reign supreme in progressive metal, proving that their journey is far from over.
