Snare, I would not add to much compression on snare. Especially Slate Snares. If you do do it, use small amount of ratio and threshold, and keep away from the attack. Eq out those annoying frequency's don't cut too much. i feel with what I use I cut out some mid's to give it more fatness. Not a lot! Just 4-6 decibles and a narrow Q. Mess with attack and sustain of the snare, generally for me I Compress the top snare a little more than the bottum, and then I take the bottom snare and limit sustain quite a bit. So it just adds to the pop in the beginning of the hit. Then the Top will have a little sustain removed and then i would add a nice verb effect to add the tail. I DO NOT put reverb on the track i send my snare to a reverb buss so that the dry snare and the reverb snare are coexisting. Then I limit the reverb. That's all i do to them, if they don't sound up to par, then get another sample.
