Options - New Recording That Overlaps Existing Media Items - Choose between the 3 options (the first is the default you got)

My personal preference is "Creates New Media Items in Separate Lane (Layers)"

This one splits up the audio and makes auto fades and if you snap each end to the grid line it jumps them to one item, pretty snazzy!

First thing is to be careful as a habit where you slice or loop record audio so that it doesn't do stupid double takes for a 1/10 of a second here and there

Yes it is. Like Unclebob said - Options - "Trim items behind existing" or something like that. I always hated having the take lanes.

There are two ways to copy and paste in reaper (more actually)

One way copies the selected items ignoring time selection (CMD ID 40057)

The other way copies the selected area of items. (CMD ID 40060)

I have one set to C and the other to CMD+C

This is also true for the Cut commands

Paste goes wherever the cursor is placed.

I thought you were talking about the empty take lanes. That's an easy fix.

Options > Take Lane Behavior > deselect "display empty take lanes"
