Dumb question... hairband on headstock?

When you put it over the strings in front of the nut it will stop the open strings ringing out when you play. Loads of people do this when recording solos to keep the noise down.

If it's above the headstock... it's either to kill the string vibrations behind the nut (which you can hear through the pickups), or to slide it down during tapping/solo sections to make things sound cleaner.

I usually just tape my strings behind the nut and bridge to kill vibrations and the subsequent ringing, and use the 'old sock' trick during portions I find especially hard to keep super clean on lead/melody gats.

Unfortunately, all of my harder tapping licks all include open strings, so I can't use the hairband/sock trick :(.

Try sliding it so that it JUST touches the strings near the nut. You can find a balance between unwanted noise and purposefully plucked notes from what I've tried.

ok, so this is gonna me sound stupid....:hypno:

When you guys say "hair band", what exactly do you mean? Do you mean a fuckin hair tie? I've tried this, but by the time I got the damn thing over the headstock, it was stretched out and completely useless. :erk:

I saw a vid of Satriani playing a strat with a bandanna tied around the nut. Is it safe to assume that this is the same concept?

yeah, anything can be used really

ive even used cymbal felts placed between the pickups cuz they're just fat enough to touch higher strings

works great for people who like to chugga chugga and you dont want their pinky to trip on one of the higher strings ruining the take

Tha't why i save the foam that my EMG's came wrapped in. my main axe's has a 1/4" strip of foam at the nut to mute the ringing. i also put it under the trem springs because they can ring as well.

and when i did a numetal band i shoved a peice under the high E+B strings of the dude's guitar because he kept hitting them by accident.
