ok... what does this accomplish? I've heard about this and have seen some players that use this technique... what does it actually do?
If it's above the headstock... it's either to kill the string vibrations behind the nut (which you can hear through the pickups), or to slide it down during tapping/solo sections to make things sound cleaner.
I usually just tape my strings behind the nut and bridge to kill vibrations and the subsequent ringing, and use the 'old sock' trick during portions I find especially hard to keep super clean on lead/melody gats.
Unfortunately, all of my harder tapping licks all include open strings, so I can't use the hairband/sock trick .

When you guys say "hair band", what exactly do you mean? Do you mean a fuckin hair tie? I've tried this, but by the time I got the damn thing over the headstock, it was stretched out and completely useless.
I saw a vid of Satriani playing a strat with a bandanna tied around the nut. Is it safe to assume that this is the same concept?
