I used to love 'em back in the 80s, they had some great songs, still nice to hear them (very) occassionally, if I happen to be in a shop and one's playing on the radio. I do like that song they did a few years ago, something about "ordinary world" or something? That guitar solo is awesome, the tone of the guitar at the start of it is to die for....

Well, compared to some "pop" Duran Duran were good at writing really catchy songs...on their own. That my real beef with pop, about 30% of it is actually written by the artist. The rest of them are just performers. Theres no real talent.
But, as for Duran Duran. I like some of their really early stuff, like Planet Earth..The Chauffer...etc. Real underrated, unpopular new-wave. But, i get into ABBA, Elton John..etc. Really well written songs.
I don't know, I listen to some of the Hardest, Heaviest, Metal heard by mankind...then I like something like that at times.
Kinda wierd.

I think "Rio" is good when you're drinking, but it's not a song I would listen to by myself. I like lots of pop music, but it's more or less all from the 60's like Lee Hazlewood, Dusty Springfield, Doris Day ("Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps"), Gene & Debbe and so on. I think most music from the 80's is gross! The 60's had much more quality and a kind of charm to it, that neither the 70's nor the 80's or 90's had. I have some 80's records like King, Level 42, Crowded House and so on, but when I find a song from the 80's that I like I usually get tired of it after a while, but this hasn't happened with 60's music. Even though I have loads of 70's funk and other 70's stuff, the 60's were better in my opinion and I think that I can say objectively that the 60's was the decade with most quality!
I think Elton John's "Goodbye yellow brick road" is a good song. "Your song" is okay, but those are the only two that I really like by him. There's also another song by him, but I don't know the name. It gets shown on VH-1 occasionally and he sits behind a piano in the video. "I'm still standing" is like "Rio". Good when you drink, but nothing I would put on myself. Songs I like from the 80's are Level 42 "Running in the family" and "Lessons in love" (from the same record), King "Love & Pride" (Paul King from MTV and VH-1), Crowded House "Don't dream it's over", David Bowie "Ashes to ashes" & "Let's dance" and Chris Isaak "Wicked game".
I think I've said this many times before, but check out Lee Hazlewood! Some of his material is superb, but some of it is uptempo country shit that sucks, so don't get scared if you find some horrible shit!!! His best stuff is from '66 and up to '73 or something. He started out pretty country in '63.

Duran Duran is awesome - right up there with Opeth, Katatonia, My Dying Bride, etc.

Although their music is nothing like the aformentioned bands, the "vibe" is there.

Duran Duran is wrongly labeled as "pop". They never have been & never will be. They wrote music that, in the early 80s, was nOTHING like the other pop of the day.
They simply "stumbled" upon stardom - it found them, not vice-versa.

They did go through a bad period however, from about '86-'90 when they DID attempt to write pop tunes - they failed at it.

Anyway, their 90s music has been even better! The album "Meddazaland" is VERY dark & fits right in with fans of Katatonia, Anathema, etc.

Seriously, D/L the following tune & see what I mean:
"Midnight Sun"

Couldn't agree more, allthough I feel that they peaked with 'Seven And The Ragged Tiger'. Not to say that they haven't done anything worthwhile since, but that was just such a complete album and the individual musicians were really given a lot of room to do their best work. And I wouldn't really classify them as Pop either. Maybe "Art Pop" or something like that. Still not quite the right nomenclature for them.

Seriously, if you haven't heard anything by DD that isn't one of their hits, you're really missing out. Also of interest is the Arcadia side project. Simon, Nick, and Roger from DD along with a few other noteable musicians: David Gilmore, Sting, Herbie Hancock, Grace Jones, and others. Really cool album and it goes a long way to show how over-the-top artsy the DD guys could get when they weren't restrained.

The full original lineup of DD is finally back together again for the first time since 1985. Their new album should be pretty much done by now.

Hey guys, Duran Duran is a rock band...Believe in me!
I have heard many demo tapes of their songs and they all have guitar riffs, bass, drums...the basic structure of a rock band...when they go to studio they turn everything into something more softer, with more improvement and so on...but what I mean is that their origin in music is completely based in rock n' roll.
