I don't think they have mobile enough trunks, but even if they did they would lack the mental capacity to do so. It's already been proven that dogs can play basketball though (Airbud), so maybe an elephant could grasp the ball with his trunk and do a slamtrunk (that was probably the corniest thing i've ever said)

Before we discuss why they can't play basketball, provide me with conclusive evidence that they are incapable of playing the sport.

It would be pretty hard to play defense against one, and also I think they are physically incapable of dribbling. They would probably crush a human player during a game, this is assuming they had the intelligence to do so.
